well, I didn't get offered an alternative when I bought salmon today - the chap behind the counter did ask the lady who was behind me if she would like to try the coley (she was buying smoked haddock).

I think it's a good idea though, I'm sure many of us tend to stick to the same type of fish.

Same as in the blog for me. Was told if I bought anything from the fish counter I'd get some of the free fish. a 150g of mussles, about the same of trout or a huge bit of coley. I went for the trout myself.

I was also told I had to buy something to get the free sample. Disappointing lack of communication between stores when some are giving it "no strings attached" and some are requiring a purchase.

The way it's worded, I never read that any other way than a BOGOF - buy a popular fish and get a less popular one for free. I do know however of one person who managed to get a lemon sole for free without having to buy another fish so I guess it's confusing even for the supermarket employees.
    Reclaimed thanks to this site:

  • I read it on the Facebook page for Sainsburys last night. My interpretation was the same as Sainsburys- a BOGOF offer when you bought one of the over fished species. They've run the same promotion before with exactly the same offer and there wasn't any confusion.

I think it because they've worded it 'an alternative'. To me, using that word makes it sound like you'll be changing what you asked for, and getting the 'alternative' fish.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

Sounds like the advertising is unclear, they should have marketed it as a BOGOF, not a free sample or an alternative. If even Martin was confused anyone could be.

Well in my opinion, if I can get some free mussels out of buying a portion of fish, I'd be well chuffed. I like to eat fish regularly anyway and so any deal usually draws me in, be it BOGOF or otherwise. The advertising is unclear, but I'm going to make a trip to my Sainsbury's fish bar this weekend now!

I love fish and I too would be more than happy to receive free fish after buying one. :) this is exciting. I will be popping into my local Sainsburys to see what the crack is :)
