Does anyone know anything that a physically disabled person can do?

I go to physio every week, but the exercises aren't going to lose me any weight.

I have arthritis in my hip and lower back so walking is out of the question.

I also have arthritis in my hip and my Consultant has referred me to a local Healthy Living Centre, they have given me a suitable exercise programme. This is a free 12 week programme provided by the NHS, not sure yet what happens after this 12 weeks though. Last week I had my 6 week review and have lost 9lb since I started the programme. I'm also going to Slimming World:j

Get a dog! OK not so cheap but they have to be walked whatever the weather so will ensure you get out there and do the walk. Or borrow one; often there will be somoeone nearby who for various reasons can't walk their dog as much as it would like. If you have a dog are you giving it as much excersise as it needs? Don't cheat by going to the park and letting it run around while you sit on a bench. And runing around playing a fetch game or frisby with a dog is great fun.

Our local council gym is pretty inxepensive (for a gym) but they do really good value swimming passes which are cheap and let you swim during any public swimming time. Alternate your lengths with walking across the pool in water up to the top of your thighs, really tones the legs and is especialy good if you are not a great swimmer.

Aquarunning! No impact but you are supported by the water and the floatation suit. The effort obviously is the push against the water rather than gravity.

Back to the original subject of the thread. Get a few friends to go walking with it makes it more fun. 30 minutes per day, three days a week is supposed to be very good for you.

If you are going running or walking use an MP3 player with audio books downloaded onto it as it makes the time even more enjoyable.(50 Shades of Grey might be a bit distracting though).

Pick up exercise DVDs or equipment at Charity Shops or Car Boot Sales. I've seen DVDs at 50p - £1. I picked up (just) a set of weights in a carry case for £3. Also look out on Freecycle/Freegle for these items or even put a 'wanted' on for them.

Get on your bike! Start by cycling for all those short journeys (2 miles or so) to the shop or to work, and build up from there. It's quicker than walking, cheaper than driving, and great exercise. If you've not cycled in a while, you may be able to get free cycle training through your local council, and lots of councils run 'Dr Bike' sessions where a mechanic will give your bike a free once-over. Plus it's great fun!

To the disabled poster (sorry, head's a shed today, forgotten your name already:() - I'm disabled, can't walk at all with any footwear on, so go barefoot at home.

I'm too embarrassed to go to a gym (can just imagine the derision) so we invested in a WiiFit, and I've lost two and a half stone with that!:T My husband has also lost one and a half stone.

It's great because you just choose what you can manage, you can do 10 minutes at a time then rest if you want, and you do it when it suits you, not thing "oh no, it's Monday 19:00 and I have to attend the gym now" style of thing.

Other than that, smaller portions (try using a smaller plate, some folks find it helps) and tap water to drink.:o
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)
  • I highly recommend The Harcombe Diet. Really works. Came across it by accident.

In a nutshell, cut out carbs and sugar/anything ending in "ose" from your food cupboards. You'd be amazed at how many items have sugar in them. Phase One only lasts five days and can give dramatic results (it did for me and the missus anyway).

Even better, there's a deal on at the moment for the books at Zoe's website: http://theharcombediet.com/prima/

  • I've personally lost about a stone in the past year or so, here are my best tips...

    1. Don't take money to work. I don't carry cash every day because I know I will spend it on unnecessary snacks or drinks. About once a week I'll buy lunch at work but the rest of the days take a healthy packed lunch such as home made soup, noodles, beans with salad... and then keep a few bits at my desk such as dried fruit and nuts and green tea so I can have something if 'boredom hunger' strikes.

    2. Go vegetarian/vegan!! I wouldn't tell anyone to go veggie against their will but if you've been thinking about it then give it a go even if it's just for some of the time. It saves money, makes you plan your meals, and (for me at least) helps shift some of those stubborn pounds

    3. Go running or walking. All you need to invest in is a pair of trainers. You can get sports apps for free to track your walks/runs. See if there are any local running/walking clubs, these can be joined free or very cheaply.

    4. Find exercises you can do at home. As others have mentioned you can pick up exercise DVDs online very cheaply. There are also videos and workout plans you can get for free, just do a quick search for 'printable workout plan', 'abdominal exercises', 'cardio exercises' etc... once you know a few exercises you can squeeze in a 15 minute workout in the morning or evening. Mix them up so you don't get bored and add in exercises from ballet/pilates/yoga/aerobics/anything you fancy!!

    Works for me!! :T
  • Candida (a yeast infection in the gut) is very common (if you have toenail fungus, athlete's foot, thrush, etc then try this diet) - it tends to be caused by antibiotics killing all the beneficial bacteria in the gut (and can build up over a number of years).

The diet means cutting out all sugar and yeast (including alcohol and fruit). It's quite strict, but if successful you could (like me) lose your pot belly in the space of a week (pot belly caused in this case by IBS type symptoms - getting bloated when eating the offending foods - this is a symptom of Candida).

If you have Candida you are also predisposed to food sensitivities and so you may also find that the weight drops off by cutting out wheat and glutinous foods.

I've found that just cutting out alcohol has saved me a fortune! Not that I'm a heavy drinker... ;)

Instead of buying expensive pasta and baking sauces, that contain fat, sugar and salt, use cheap tins of chopped tomatoes - add some chilli powder and dried herbs (and maybe crushed garlic) and you can get trim while saving money!
  • ride a bike! if you can do this over a safe route on a regular journey you'll be fitter, happier and a bit leaner too. I have dropped a dress size by cycling to work, it's quicker than taking my usual bus and I've not changed anything about the way I eat. I've met new 'friends' to greet each morning and it's handy for stopping to do small errands on the way.
