When it was really cold and I was putting on layer after layer, I took pity on my pug and thought he needed a jumper of his own. The prices in the shops are ridiculous and they never seem to fit properly anyway, so I found instructions online for a 'no sew' jumper made from the sleeve of an old human jumper (it couldn't be simpler; cut the sleeve off and cut two slits for legholes)

So I found an old fleece et voila!

Baked beans! Everyone buy these, why not make your own?

Tin of haricot or flageolet beans (or dry ones, soaked)
Tin if tomatoes (whole are cheaper, chop them up in the can with scissors)
    Finely sliced onion
    Tsp of sugar
    Worcestershire sauce
    A little paprika
    Salt and pepper
    Olive oil
    Garlic

Caramelise the onions with the sugar in the olive oil - the slower the better.

Add beans, tomatoes, garlic, paprika, dash of Worcs sauce and simmer. If you need more liquid, add a stock cube dissolved in 200mls of water. Simmer until cooked down.

Add salt and pepper to taste!

Drain cleaner - bicarb of soda washed down the drain with a glug of vinegar and leave for ten mins. Tip two cups of boiling water down the sink, and hey presto!

Repeat if your sink needs some extra TLC.

Some more... Homemade art. Paint a series of large colourful dots in a matrix formation and frame it in a modern-looking Ikea frame. Voila, you are Damien Hirst.

Placemats. I bought some upholstery material from a second hand furniture shop - navy with yellow checking for £2. It made four lovely place mats which have proved to be very tough wearing over the past five years. They can be cleaned in the washing machine too.

Curry powder. Don't buy expensive premixed curry powder - or any other spice mix for that matter. Armed with a 10pound note, visit your local Indian food shop and buy your spices.

    - Tumeric
    - cumin
    - corriander
    - cardamon
    - cayenne/ chilli pepper
    - ginger
    - cinnamon
    - nutmeg
    - peppercorns
    - Mustard seeds

You can make lots of great combos from these spices - tagines, curries, chillis etc.. I use lots of cumin in particular.

Homemade yoghurt.. spend one-off on a yoghurt maker (costs max £20) and have lovely and healthy yoghurt all the time, any time!

Homemade pasta sauce - takes some fresh tomatoes and chopped tomato tins, onions and any spices/herbs you like!

Home-done repairs - My favourite wall clock fell off the wall and clock hands became loose making my wall clock unusable. New similar clocks were too costly everywhere I searched. Then found replacement clock hands on ebay worth less than £2. Voilà!

Homemae spices - As pointed in above post, we can always get whole spices from a local indian shop and save loads. To add to that, we can dry some of these spices e.g. cumin, in the oven (until they slightly change colour) and powder them in home mixer. The fragrance and flavour is so much more awesome!
