  • Not too bad. Needs to reach 3.6 million to be as bad per capita as the 1980's...

On the positive side its 92% employment.
  • "A record number of people are working part-time because they cannot find full-time jobs, up by 83,000 over the latest quarter to 1.35 million."

What a sweeping statement, which I find typical of some journalists these days, too lazy to write a proper article by explaining why they say this or what survey data back it up.

I'm sure there are a lot of people who want FT work and can only get PT, fair play.

But there will be many who have gone from FT to PT as a step along the retirement path, so for them, its not a case of "its the only work they can get".

A little context is sometimes useful.

    Rant over.

  • On MSN yesterday they said the overall situation was that 6.4 million were unable to get aFULL TIME position; taking into account all the people on part time work etc..For me personally I wish government would abolish recruitment agencies {were it up to me I'd fire-bomb the lot} all they do is use and abuse people. Currently I am taking my fourth agency to small claims court for failing and reneging on agreed payments. I have won the last three, but why should one be placed in these positions in the first place?
  • All that will happen if you abolish recruitment agencies is more people will end up unemployed. I did agency work for 16 years and never had to chase one up for pay.
  • Not too bad? are you taking the pi$$?

Its worse now than the 1980s because there are about 9.5 million economically inactive adults as well as all those signing on for JSA- 2.67 million.
A lot of those young people will never work and people who have been made redunant may not be able to get back into work.
There was a job for a van driver at a local charity and it had over 250 applicants, most jobs I've been for have 80-100 applicants for one post. How is this not too bad?

I agree totally, Unless something is done, the fact is I may not work again,OK that sounds dramatic but there is simply nothing out there and the rare time there is a job I could apply for like you say 100+ applicants.

It is certainly difficult times at the moment. A lot of people who would not normally have anything to do with benefits are having to claim Job Seekers.

I found this useful site where you can get free Citizen's advice Bureau advice on money and benefits online via email: www. onespace.org.uk /ask-expert-money-advice

Saves you having to wait for a appointment!
