    How long before these become bog standard?

    Sales of an oversized toilet seat have been surging as Britain's obesity rate has gone through the roof.

    The Big John toilet seat is five inches wider than a normal seat, and can hold a person weighing up to 60 stone.

    Although the seat costs 200, it has been a huge hit since it was first imported from America two years ago.

    Steven Evanson of Gordon Ellis & Co, the company in Derby which imports the Big John, says the seat's introduction tapped into a 'latent demand' for products directed at larger people.

    He says the seat has been consistently popular, as 'people are getting bigger, wider and heavier.

    'We tell them, "Your bums aren't too big - your toilet seat isn't big enough".'

    The Big John, which can be fitted to a standard toilet bowl, has been available for several years in the U.S., where it is sold by more than 300 retailers.

    It is thought that nearly 23 per cent of Britons are now obese, while around half of us are overweight.
