George Benjamin: Dance Figures

Bela Bartok: Concerto for Orchestra
Esa-Pekka Salonen conductor
Viktoria Mullova violin
Stravinskys Violin Concerto is part of his neoclassical oeuvre, and was composed for Samuel Dushkin, an American violinist. The piece was used by George Balanchine as the music for two ballets, the first of which was premiered in 1941, two years before Bart!k composed his Concerto for Orchestra. Bart!k?s innovative work combines the folk melodies of his native Hungary that the composer spent so many years researching, with his exciting and fresh harmonies, and its unusual title is due to his treatment of single instruments or groups of instruments in a soloistic manner. The concert opens with Benjamins Dance Figures, to celebrate his 50th birthday year.
When this Rite [of Spring] was at its fiercest, Salonen looked as if he was in the
grip of a trance, as if the music was being hot-wired directly from his ear into his
nervous system. And we responded in kind' (Times).
