aarrgghh! Car huge bill, how can I do better next time?

Hi everyone

I was just thinking that I'd be OK until next month if nothing else happened, when my car packed up.

I booked it into a garage but it was a couple of days before they could give me a quote (it was the weekend, busy etc).

Now they say it's over £900! (half labour, half parts). I accept that it's going to be expensive, and I do a lot of miles in my job, but now they've got me over a barrel: their labour is pricey, but any other garage is going to have to order in the parts same as this one. I've told them NOT to 'replace the ruined carpets', I don't care about them! And I need my car back for work! I'm not sure how I could really have avoided this.

Can anyone help?

Just to add - I work away from home 3 nights a week and am usually on the road - trying to organise life generally is a nightmare and I'm now off away again (minus car) for 9 days! No way to vet other garages etc.

Can anyone suggest ways to cut these costs for future reference? I know I'm being stung. thank you all...

total debt as at 02/02/06 = 18944

2006 target = finally get my share of money from divorce, pay off cards
rest of year = use remaining money to build up house deposit
2007 = buy a house

I did it - am now safely in house with my boyfriend. We're sorting out our joint finances and getting organised. GOOD LUCK to all those on the board. You can get there.

    Firstly ask (Local) friends if they can advise of a good mechanic, Normally an old man who works in a back street is the best kept secret.

    Secondly I think this would fall into the " Emergancy" Catagory where by you most likely needed the closest garage at the time in this case it cant really be avoided.

    Just out of curiosity can i ask what happened to the car ??
    If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

    Hi Hope. If I was a mechanic I'd offer to do it free but I struggle changing a plug so maybe not!
    Just wondered why you have 2 car loans? Does that mean you have 2 cars? My OH and me have a car each but they're only worth about £1500 each and at least they are not on credit...about the only thing that isn't at the moment.If you've got 2, couldn't you get rid of one?Anyway, not much help from me but hope someone can help.
