I'm going to buy a breadmaker! (merged threads)

I can't resist it any longer today is the day! I am going to buy a breadmaker, I have read all the threads and I am going for the best the Panasonic 253. Does anyone know the cheapest place to buy one at the moment, I have seen mention on here of £80 something but both argos and lakeland are nearer £100.

This might sound daft, when you want to make a french stick or rolls do you put all the ingredients in and stop it just before the baking stage then get the dough out and make the shape you want and cook it in an ordinary oven? Thick aren't I but I have never seen one working

Thanks
Loretta

  • make sure you add on delivery charges. I noticed that Robert Dyas has the SD252 on their site for about £80 (I think)...no nut dispenser tho.

  • well loretta,

Id advice you not to buy one as I spent £60 for one at argos 3 years ago a murphy richards quick bake. I have really tried to bake good bread with it and to be honest some of the stuff that came out, a dog wouldn't eat it. You have to remember that bread making is a science all in itself (nothing actually wrong with breadmaker) Its probably something I am doing wrong but I have given up trying to find out what.

Dont be tempted by all these fancy ads for breadmakers. It really isn't that easy I think

Theres a thread with lots of advice on buying a breadmaker on the Old Style board that may help you.

  • To make bread rolls or french sticks or any other "non loaf" shaped bread, look in the instructions for a list of times for each program. It will tell you how long each phase of mixing, proofing, baking etc... lasts. Just add the times together up until the baking cycle (be sure to not let it start cooking) and off you go.

Yup....people who previously had the MR and couldn't make good bread bought the Panasonic and reckon it's the dogs nadgers!

Try Amazon - I have just bought the Panasonic 252 from them and I'd also say to think how often you will want to add fruit and/or seeds to your bread. If the answer is 'never' then it is not worth paying £20 extra for the 253.

Thank you all for replying, I have read just about everything on this site that has ever been written about breadmakers. I did want to make sure that I did not buy a 'cheap' one and find it didn't work and then either be put off breadmakers or buy several before I found one that worked.

Joemardo1 I have read through what several people have said about the Morphy Richards Quick Bake and they all seem to say the same as you and that is what I did not want to happen. Some of the others seem to be a bit hit and miss as well, I know breadmaking is not as simple as, say, making cakes etc so the machine has to do it the right way. Everyone seems to agree that the Panasonic either 252 or 253 is the one and seems to be virtually fool proof. I will let you know know how I get on.

    Hi

I bought a Morphy Richards Fast Bake a couple of years ago. I use it nearly everyother day! It has 13 different settings. Including dough only! I've made bread, rolls, pizza base, banana cake etc., I love it! I think you have to decide not to buy bread, to make you use it.

The only problem I had was when the bearings went at the base of the pan, but it was within the 2 year guanrantee period and they replace it free of charge.

As long as you measure your ingrediants carefully you shouldn't have a problem. If you use it regularly, you won't need to look at the recipe book, as you learn the ingrediants and measurements off by heart! Enjoy!

  • Hiya,

This may be a little off-topic (but if I don't need to buy a new one I guess it's moneysaving!) - I have a Morphy Richards Quickbake breadmaker and I lost the measuring cup... not wanting to shell out on a new one, but knowing that it's imperative to get the measurements correct:

could someone with a MR Quickbake fill up their measuring cup with water, pour it into a standard measuring jug and let me know how many millilitres/floz. it takes?

    Ta :)
