Cost of a Notary/Commissioner of Oaths

my recently passed away uncle left a small amount in his savings a/c. The amount is not large enough to have to seek probate, the building society have asked I merely sign a statutory declaration to indemnify them in case of future claims.

Fine - except they have asked that my declaration be witnessed by either a solicitor, commisioner of oaths or notary public. Does this mean I am forced to ask a solicitor watch me sign the form then charge £50 or so for the privilage ? Is there a way of getting this done for no cost ?

To have a solicitor witness the form will cost you no more than £5.00.

Notary publics witness documents with international elements which solicitors cannot and they pay a fee for the privilege of doing so. They therefore charge in the region of £50 just for you to walk through the door.

However, provided your uncle lived in this country and the account is in this country it will simply be the £5.00 fee.

thanks Bossyboots - being the cynic I am when it comes to all things legal, I thought they'd have a minimum £50 fee for anything... feel a lot better about it now
