Those lovely views from the Temple, those romantic interiors in Heaton Hall. The woods, the flowers, and the animals. Well, maybe not the animals.
Generations of Mancunian Romeo & Juliets have wandered the sylvan groves of Heaton Park, gazing into each other's eyes and plighting their troth. Or even just sneaking a snog.
There'll be more of that sort of stuff this summer when the Bard comes to play. Bill Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, directed by Elizabeth Freestone, is going open-air at Heaton Park later this month. This comes courtesy of Globe Touring from Globe Theatre in London.
It's the first time the company has brought its individual style of open-air amusement to the real Capital City of Mancunia. Booking ahead seems essential.
The classic and tragic tale of the 'star-crossed lovers' will unravel itself in front of the lovely Dower House at the northern end of the park. And of course amidst the smooching audiences get violence, passion and comedy.
Audiences are advised to bring a rug (and an umbrella) as no seating is provided in order to enhance the natural atmosphere of the performance. The field will be open for picnics one hour before the play begins. Bring an umbrella as well, as the weather has yet to be convinced that this is Heaton Park.
Directed by Elizabeth Freestone, this stripped-down open-air production of Shakespeare's most famous tragedy has all the ingredients to entertain a modern audience; violence, passion, comedy and romance, all of which transport Shakespeare's Verona cleverly and vibrantly to Manchester's Heaton Park.
