To win a copy of the brilliant and richly-illustrated book ‘Changing Clothes in China’ by Antonia Finnane (Hurst & Company, £25) – reviewed in this issue of Apollo – just answer the following question:
What is a cheongsam?
Answer: A Traditional Chinese Dress
Email your answer to offers@apollomag.com and we’ll announce the winner the following Friday. Good luck!
The cheongsam is a body-hugging one-piece Chinese dress for women. It is known in Chinese as the q!p!o (旗袍), q!p!or (旗袍儿), Wade-Giles ch'i-p'ao, and is also known in English as a mandarin gown. The modern cheongsam is a modernized version of the qipao of the Manchurians who conquered China in the 17th century (Qing Dynasty).
