chance to win Pom-Bear cycle safety kits worth £60
Safe Cycling campaign, sponsored by Pom-Bear
We have 3 x Pom-Bear cycle safety kits containing everything children need to help them cycle safely: helmet, lights, high visibility jacket and arm bands in a fun Pom-Bear bag, worth £60 each.
The proportion of primary school children being driven to school rose from 29% to 41% in the ten years to 2005, despite the fact that one in three children said they would choose to cycle. In reality, however, only 2% do [1]. Teach your kids to cycle safely and give yourself a well-deserved break from the school run!

Benefits for kids who cycle to school - the school journey is an ideal opportunity for kids to…
  • learn road safety awareness and other life skills
  • become more confident
  • gain freedom and independence
  • get the daily exercise levels they need for a healthy, balanced lifestyle
  • fully wake up and arrive at school alert and raring to go
Perhaps the most important benefit of getting kids into cycling is to promote a healthier lifestyle, which includes making sure they get enough physical activity.
Did you know that only six out of ten boys and four out of ten girls achieve the recommended minimum of one hour of moderate physical activity every day [2]
Cycling offers one of the best forms of exercise that’s also fun. “Just 15 minutes cycling to and from school could make a real difference to your child's fitness, establishing habits of healthy activity that could be life-long” [3]
However, a major reason why more children do not cycle (or walk) to school is parents concern for their safety.
Cycling safety tips supported by Pom-Bear

Pom-Bear recognises the many benefits for kids of cycling to school and is launching a safe cycling campaign from April to June to encourage kids to get on their bikes and teach them key cycling safety tips, so you can feel confident of their safety travelling to school.

    Always make sure that:
  • Your child's bike is roadworthy – (encourage them to do the Bikeability cycling training scheme which includes learning how to check their bike)
  • Your child is seen – ensure they wear brightly coloured or reflective clothing
  • Your child is not weighed down by heavy bags and rucksacks
  • Your child wears a helmet that its properly – the Department for Transport strongly recommends wearing a helmet at all times
  • Your child plans their cycle route before they set off and makes use of cycle lanes where possible
