Same price in Sainsburys.

I looked at them, but couldn't make out if it was a 3 PAYG mobile, or just a skype phone . . .

It looks like the 3 Skypephone - which you can use with a 3 PAYG sim as a normal 3G phone or as a Skypephone (or both). I had one but didn't really get on with it because of the poor battery life. However, at £39.99, it is a good price for a PAYG which you can use to make free Skype to Skype calls on.

I have one of these, I got it from Woolies. This phone is a WP-S1 and comes with a 256Mb Micro SD card in box which doesn't get a mention anywhere ! also has earphones and PC cable, software etc...
Good replacement to keep me going until upgrade, might even keep it if battery turns out to be any good !

With 3G P&G topups expiring after 30 days and having a low usage pattern I don't see this as a bargain as it must be kept in credit to use skype.

Cool

Is the phone locked, as I intend to take it to Denmark for the summer?

Top ups
Where a Top-up is bought in store and a 16-digit code provided, the Top-up needs to be activated within 90 days of buying it. Once activated, Top-ups have no expiry date.

You can also get £10 if you port your number to 3

I can't find any reference on 3's site, but I think you need to top-up £10 every 30 days to maintain your Skype function.
