In the actual story, Constance Kent was arrested for the murder and confessed to doing it. Constance Kent has 13 letters. As far as I can make out, the crossword only has 12 shaded squares, which contain all the letters of Constance Kent except that an "E" is missing. I think the answer is intended to be Constance Kent and they have missed out on shading one square.

NOTE: The email subject should be Competition: The Suspicions of Mr Whicher
If you copy and paste the email addy from the OP, I think you need to make sure that you don't include the full stop at the end.0
