How to cook with powdered formula milk?

Just a quick question as I'm off to bed in a second. Can you just sprinkle the powder in to whatever you're making and add hot water or does it need to be measured out?

(I've never used formula before.)

He's 14 months old and it's SMA progress (because that's all they had.) Don't know if that makes any difference.

Thanks.

(I'm off to bed now but will check the responses when I get up.)

at 14 months old a baby can have ordinary cow's milk.

i would make the formula up first if you do want to use it though.

Aren't you able to use cows' milk at that age? I don't know what current thinking is. If I used it I would make it at correct strength then dissolve in lukewarm water/

At 14 months it is not frowned upon to be on only cows milk. My 3 were if it counts for anything. But when i was using SMA i used to make it in to milk for and make rice pudding, cheese sauce for the children. Even though they could of had cows milk in cooking from 6 months.

I think that Gingham's DS has a allergy to cows milk.

Unfortunately I have never cooked with formula although my instinct would be to make it up first at the correct strength because I think that you can make LO's quiet ill if its to strong.

    Hi Gingham!

Use the scoop provided to measure the powder - you need warm water (boiled) to mix. As other posters have said, you can use full fat cows milk after 12m, unless things have changed - they do, even from baby to baby, IMHO..

I used to use the scoop, level with the back of a knife and follow the directions as to how much to use. IHTH

edited to say - I would make up and then use as milk in recipes

At 14 months I'd use ordinary cows milk.. my oldest was on cows milk at 6 months.. skimmed at that as it was the only thing he would drink!

Thank you. I will make it up to a pint and use it like that.

He has chronic anaemia. The formula is fortified with iron so the faffing about is going to be useful to us. He may also have a dairy intolerance but I've been advised not to do an elimination diet without supervision and the hospital appointment is a fortnight away. (I did try for a few days but I DO need help. Because they also think he might have coeliac disease.)

You can get soya formula I think. When ds wasn't feeding we tried everything we could find to get him to drink his milk! I battled with feeding him for a couple of weeks and then expressed for a month. Tried all sorts after that, before giving him cows' milk at 9 weeks old (which he took much better) and started giving him solids at 11 weeks.

I realise that this was unconventional, but it worked for him. The 'rules' seem to change frequently on what you should do with babies, but in the end you do what you feel is right for your child.

I used to get really upset making up formula for DD2 - she was born at 25 weeks gestation and was small for dates anyway. The Doctor gave me a calorie boosting addition for her as well as an iron additive. It felt more like a chemistry session than food! Still, she is 11 now and a very healthy little girl (if a bit petite still!)

I hope you get the help you need, we saw a dietician who was brilliant.

Thank you, morwenna. 25 weeks? You must have worked so hard. I can't imagine. She sounds lovely!

He's a strapping, chubby little tearaway. It's hard to believe he is 'malnourished' in any way. I'm hoping it will be sorted out soon. The formula is still sitting there glaring at me...I don't even know what to put it in. Off to find a jug and a spoon...

Edit: I don't know what I was fussing for. That was okay. (It's in a sucky cup.)
