E: 31/03/08 - Audio Armour earplugs (worth £99)

Don’t Lose the Music – Stay Safe and Win Some Earplugs

We’ve got some fantastic prizes for you to win, a pair of custom made Audio Armour earplugs (worth £99) and 5 pairs of ER20 disposable earplugs, as part of a campaign to help clubbers protect their hearing against loud music.

RNID research at www.dontlosethemusic.com reveals that 90 per cent of young people have experienced signs of hearing damage, such as ringing in the ears or tinnitus, after a night out. RNID wants to educate young everyone about the risk of exposure to loud noise.

As part of this campaign, we have interviewed Ministry of Sound Radio DJs Rob Roar, Allister Whitehead and Jazzy M to talk about how to ‘practice safe decks’ when out clubbing. Listen to each of these in depth interviews by downloading the audio podcasts here from iTunes. Also, watch the exclusive video online here on Ministry of Sound TV or download the video to your iPod or MP3 player in iTunes here.

We spoke to Ash, a campaigner for RNID,
“Though loud music can cause damage to your ears, it doesn’t mean you have to stop listening to music. There are lots of things you can do to make sure you are protecting your ears. If you are in a loud venue make sure you stand away from the speakers, make sure you are taking regular breaks using the chill out areas, that’s what they are for. You can also wear earplugs designed to reduce the volume, but not the quality of the sound that is getting into your ears.”
“Most people assume that there are laws and regulations in place to protect your hearing. This in fact is not the case. Your hearing is your responsibility.”

To be in with a chance of winning the 1st prize of a pair of Audio Armour earplugs worth (worth £99), and 5 runners up prizes of a pair of disposable ER20 earplugs, supplied by AudioRelief.co.uk, check out the video feature and answer the question below.

Competition closes 31st March 2008. No personal data will be supplied to RNID or AudioRelief.co.uk by entering this competition.

“When we listen to loud music, the sound waves come in and they are hitting our hair cells, and they are flattening or breaking. After a few hours these hair cells will bounce back up and your hearing will go back to normal. But if you go out night after night, year after year and these hair cells have been flattened again and again it is possible that one day these hair cells aren't going to spring up.”
Once you have lost hair cells, how long does it take for them to grow back?
