Motorola PAYG for £5

UPDATE NOTE 19 MARCH 08 11am
The phone has now sold out. Any other good phone deals will appear in the weekly e-mail.
What's the deal?
TJ Hughes is selling a basic Motorola mobile for the bargain price of £5. If you want it delivered it'll cost £8.60.
To find your nearest TJ Hughes store, use its Store Locator. Limited to one per customer.
It's not a high tech handset
It's not going to win any prizes for its features, but the Motorola F3 is an ideal backup/granny in the glovebox phone. Its 'digital paper' screen is large and easy-to-read, and the fact it's black and white may actually be an advantage here, as it gives the phone a decent battery life of over a week of average use.
This simplicity extends to the menus too; it's easy to get around the phone, just don't expect to find anything but the basics. SMS messaging is about the limit of the handset's capabilities (though ropey voice recognition is also possible).
Is it unlockable?
Reports are that it can be unlocked, making it a great backup handset in case you lose your main one. For more details on phone unlocking read the Mobile Unlocking: Unlock the savings article.
Do a call cost comparison
If you want a new PAYG phone to make calls rather than just as a backup, read the Cheapest Mobiles article for the top deal. Otherwise the savings made by buying this handset will be dwarfed by expensive call costs.

Bargain shop TJ Hughes are offering the Motorola F3 Motofone on Orange for a bargain £5 (if you can collect from one of their stores) or £8.60 including delivery to UK mainland. There's no sneaky requirement to buy top up either so it's a genuine fiver if you're near a store.

Possibly not the best phone in the world but for a fiver who's arguing. The one I bought was unlocked although obviously there's no guarantees.0 -
I remember buying this phone when e2save had it on offer with credit applied.
It's not the greastest phone in the world but is ideal for keeping as a standby emergency phone.Hello again0 -
This is a great phone - particularly for silver dialers! Easy to use and reliable with good battery life. These can be unlocked - but not for free as far as I know... expect to pay around £5 for a code or £5 to a phone shop/market stall for a "traditional" cable unlock

Same phone but virgin network was posted here
Motorola F3 unlocked, 10 quid Virgin Credit...all for 14.95!
still available an hour ago but they now seem to be limiting this to one per customer.
Basic phone £4.95, £10 credit is already on the phone(no 8 days waiting like some companies) go through Quidco/phones4u for another £10, Quidco tracked quickly.
Excellent phone for the children.

I bought this for my wife a little while back through quidco and managed to buy it for just a few quid (from phones4u). Its a dreadful phone with large text scrolling across the screen (word by word) when you view your text's rather than the normal. It also has a voice talking to you as the menu - which can be difficult to hear.Loving freebies:coffee::rotfl:0

Bought a few for gifts a while back when they were sub £10 and everyone has been thrilled with the nifty little handset. Not action packed but good little phone for new users or either end of the age scale.MSE - Longtime learner of debt management, better at helping others than sorting myself out. does anyone by any chance have a linkup for a place to get these handsets unlocked. I understand its possible, but Id like to see where. Folks probably wont mind too much about paying a fiver to get it unlocked, or so.
Thank you.Only Linux make is possible!0 -
Don't be fooled though, the Motorola F3 is not a good phone. The screen/text is dire and the voice "help" will get to you
. It also resonates whilst you are talking and feels as though it was made in the 80's by Lada. Maybe OK as a standby, but that's all. 0
