It’s got sex, violence, genocide, wholesale destruction and a whole lot more. What’s more it’s not a digitally enhanced, FX-laden Hollywood snoozeathon, it’s the real thing. And its stars are not megabucks actors fuelled by egos, rather spiders, beetles, ants, snails, caterpillars and mosquitoes.
This is Microcosmos, a truly amazing and awe-inspiring film due in special edition form on DVD from Second Sight on March 10, 2008. Some 15 years in the making from its original inception, including three years of actual filming, this multi-award winning film presents insect life in all its glory, focusing on numerous different creatures going about their daily life. It takes in all aspects of life – birth, work, conflict, death – and offers a universe that is as alien as the best sci-fi.
The narration, by Kristin Scott-Thomas, is kept to a bare minimum, as directors Claude Nuridsany and Marie Perennou let the marvellous images do their work. As well as spending three years filming Microcosmos, the production took a further two years two develop the cameras and technology needed to capture the cornucopia of creepy-crawlies up close and personal. Stunningly remastered for this special edition DVD, the incredible Microcosmos looks better than ever before.
