HE GAVE birth to a country – one that was named after him – but his role within the nascent Rhodesia, which almost a century later became Zimbabwe, was mired in controversy. The fascinating and intriguing tale of the evolution of a nation is told in Rhodes, the story of the eponymous colonist who believed fervently in the British Empire.
This eight-part BAFTA nominated drama tells the fascinating story of Cecil Rhodes, how he became the wealthiest man in the world and founded Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). The series will be released as a gorgeous double disc set featuring all eight episodes courtesy of Acorn Media on 3 March 2008.
Set at the end of the 19th Century, this powerful drama stars Martin Shaw (George Gently), as the anti-hero Rhodes, the founder of the De Beers diamond company, with his son Joe starring as the young Rhodes. Originally broadcast on BBC One in 1996, it also stars Frances Barber (Goal), Neil Pearson (Drop the Dead Donkey) and Ken Stott (Rebus).
