“Ah! Is that so? Indeed!” said the gentleman with sandy whiskers, looking curiously at Jemima.
The Tale of Jemima Puddle-duck is one of Beatrix Potter’s most popular stories. Beatrix chose the setting of Hill Top Farm, her beloved Lake District home, whilst Jemima was based on one of the ducks who lived there. Kep, the dog who rescues the ditzy Jemima from the deceptively charming fox, was Beatrix’s favourite sheepdog.
Many of the illustrations are still recognisable as elements of Hill Top Farm. The ironwork gate with the porch of the farmhouse in the background can still be seen at the National Trust property today. Also making an appearance in the Tale are Mrs Cannon and her son Ralph. Mr and Mrs Cannon and their children Ralph and Betsy were living at Hill Top Farm when Beatrix bought it in 1905 and she asked them to stay on to manage the farm for her. On publication of The Tale of Jemima Puddle-duck in 1908, Beatrix included the dedication ‘A Farmyard Tale for Ralph and Betsy’
Frederick Warne will be celebrating the centenary of The Tale of Jemima Puddle-duck throughout 2008 with this delightful, commemorative edition of the original Tale.
Celebrate 100 years of Jemima Puddle-Duck with a special edition of this popular Tale. Gleaming in a gold foil jacket this is a wonderful gift for any fan of Beatrix Potter’s charming Tales.
