Jam and Jerusalem is the heart-warming comedy drama created and written by Jennifer Saunders, the star of Absolutely Fabulous and one half of Britain’s most succesful female double act, French & Saunders. Set in the Women’s Guild of the small West Country town of Clatterford St. Mary, the series stars a veritable supergroup of British comedy performers. This stellar cast includes Sue Johnston (Sal Vine), Pauline McLynn (Tip Haddem), Maggie Steed (Eileen) Dawn French (Rosie Bales), Joanna Lumley (Delilah Stagg), Jennifer Saunders (Caroline Martin), Patrick Barlow (the Vicar) Rosie Cavaliero (Kate Bales) Sally Phillips (Tash Vine) and David Mitchell (Doctor James Vine).
Sal Vine is the local practice nurse, a woman with her finger placed firmly on the pulse of her local community, but when her husband dies unexpectedly of a heart attack and her son takes over the surgery, she finds herself not only a widow but jobless too.
In a bid to stop rattling around her empty house and being pestered by the local Grieving Group counsellor, she decides it’s time to stop sleeping in the dog basket, get a haircut and take stock of her new life.
Having spent most of her time actively avoiding recruitment into the Women’s Guild, this is the last place she would have imagined herself, but times have changed and Sal soon discovers it’s not all ‘Jam and Jerusalem’.
This touching, warm and engaging comedy drama is available to buy on DVD January 21st priced at £19.99. The DVD release features the entire first series as well as the 2006 Christmas Special.
