From Comet's website:

Question
What is Comet’s returns policy when purchased at a Store?
Answer
Unopened products
At comet we always try to help. If it is brand new and still in a sealed box. Simply return the product with your receipt to the local store within 28 days of purchase or 14 days if it’s a desktop or laptop computer, and we will credit you with a gift card or offer you a full refund.
Open Products
If you have already opened the box, but have not used the product, return the product with your receipt within 28 days of purchase or 14 days if it’s a desktop or laptop computer, and we can offer you the following two options:
Re-stocking Fee (Products over £25)
If you return everything unused and complete, along with original packaging, we will deduct 10% to cover the cost of re-stocking, up to a maximum of £99.
Gift Card Credit
Alternatively we can credit you in full, on to a Comet Gift card.
Note we are unable to accept any products that have been used or returned with missing parts such as remote controls, instruction manuals etc.
Damaged Product
If you have collected your product from the store and discover any sign of damage, please do not use the product. Just contact us immediately on 08705 425 425 option 4.

Also, there's the Sale of Goods Act which states any item sold must be fit for the purpose for which it was sold. If you made it clear that you needed a laptop with certain features and they sold you something not fit for that purpose, you have a legal right to return it for a full refund, (you do NOT have to accept a credit note, a replacement or anything else, unless you wish to).
Take it back to the store and stand your ground but be quick because if you can return it within the 14 days specified in their terms then you are much more likely to get a satisfactory response.

There's also plenty more about the Sale of Goods Act on the web - just Google for it.
Oh, and for reference, I think I would have posted this in the "In My Home" forum. The following post from that forum may help:
