diluting hairdye

Has anyone tried diluting permanent hair dye with just a little water to make it easier to distribute? I have long very thick and very grey hair which needs dyeing dark brown every 5-6 weeks. I have had to start using 2 packs of dye(whatevers on special offer and covers grey-something like Nice n Easy) just to get through all the root area but two is too much but one isnt enough-and the cost is adding up. I have thought about diluting one slightly and just using that but didnt want to try in case the water neutralised the active ingredient and the lot was wasted. So, if anyone has already tried this please can they let me know how they got on. I always apply the dye to wet hair (to aid distribution) and that residual water doesn't seem to adversely affect it. Thanks.

It would have the same effect as using it on soaking wet hair - it would dribble and run everywhere!
Can't see that it would affect the colourants, but you will probably find it extremely messy and it might not 'cling' to the hair well enough to do it's job

Emuchops, I'd suggest you do your best to only dye the roots and not the lengths of your hair. If your hair has already been dyed the same colour before then it won't benefit from having more and more and more layers of dye added to it. Over time you'll find that the length of your hair will darken with build up of the chemical products, and that dying your roots to match the length will become more difficult.
As far as diluting goes, I wouldn't advise it. The dyes are all especially made. Some require application to wet hair, some to damp, towel dried or dry hair. You must read the instructions to make sure that you are supposed to add your dye to wet hair, this isn't always suitable. Adding water to the dye will alter the effectiveness of the product.
