Hospital 'Red Alert'

Can anybody tell me what it means when a hospital is on 'red alert' please?

It is related to bed availability.
Locally (not sure if it the same nationally) there used to be green (normal), amber (some bed pressures) and red (severe bed shortages). Now we have Green, amber, Yellow and Red. Yellow is the old red (or maybe amber, I can't remember which way around they are - and helpfully yellow and amber look very similar :rolleyes: ). Red here now indicates that a major incident has been declared so the hospital is ready to deal with possibly large number of casualties

Thanks guys,

Well both hospitals in our Trust are on red alert ... so we'll have to wait and see whether that means no beds or major incident.

We have asked the GP to try the surrounding Trusts (my gran is v poorly). Just waiting to hear now.

Here the bed status is always the same across all hospitals in the same trust.

I'd imagine if there'd been a major incident you'd have heard about it on the news.

Apologies for the joke, I didn't realise, hope she is better soon.

Several hospitals are on red alert at the moment due to a sickness and diarrhea bug closing wards.

Yep, assumed it would be to do with that, and we are concerned about her going in and being more susceptible to the bugs that are going round. Unfortunately it seems to be the only option now (she needs IV antibiotics and constant care).

In my experience it's best not to just wait, but keep reminding (nag) them politely.
