Every Christmas treat is laden with calories...

I have to go and start to get some food in for Christmas over the next couple of days, I do it in small doses as I cannot walk round the shops for ages.. and whenever I go to write something on my list I think oh god I can't have that in the house its laden with calories and one of my favourites..
Story goes that I have been trying so hard NOT to have all the BAD stuff for the last few months to not only get down my weight down (its just starting to work) but to eat healthy.... so how can I now bring all this @rap into the house that I just know I can't resist....
Any suggestions for Christmas treats that won't put me back on that sweet tooth road.... I just love mince pies, christmas cake, sausage rolls etc etc but I just daren't bring them into the house because I will scoff the lot.... I am so weak willed if they are lurking in the cupboard calling to me... but it also looks mean if I don't have nibbles to offer unexpected callers and family HELP!!

Speaking as someone who also has a sweet tooth, and who eats too much and will feel disgusted with myself...personally, I'd love to go to someone's house and have things like grapes+cheese on sticks (I hate pineapple), and crunchy veg etc. If the bowl is festive and there are decorations around, then I think healthy foods are a welcome relief, especially if they look colourful, big bowl of fruit etc.
We have a small buffet at work today and everything was pastry and yellow. Tasted nice but as we all bouhght similar stuff in, could have been more imaginative:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
My favourite treat is to cut up a load of fruit and melt a small bit of chocolate to use as a dip. This tends to satisfy my sweet craving without me having to feel that I've really gone off the rails.
Cherries are expensive but also stop me craving sweet things so much.0 -
hoe about rolls of cold meat, olives, crudites with a low fat dip (chopped up carrots, peppers, cucumber, baby corn etc) and make the dip yourself, low fat mayonaise with a bit of yoghurt, some curry powder or garlic powder or chili if you like spicy
In Holland we take a slice of ham and roll it up with an asperigues (sp?) spear inside it (out of a tin, so nice and soft) not everyone likes it, but I do.
even a couple of chicken breasts cut up small, marinaded in soyasauce, garlic, some lemon or orange juice and then dried fried or in a bit of live oil and eaten cold as a nibble. Or any kind of marinade you fancy or just plain. You can buy these ready made in the supermarket but costs quite a lot.

If you don't want it, don't buy it!! Buy what you want and like. I know you want to please visitors but at the cost of you being miserable and feeling lousy? Most people overeat at christmas and would probably feel relieved not to have to eat more, Or if you feel you have to buy in, just get 1 tin of nice biscuits no more.

I feel your pain... I've just gone on a diet. Brilliant timing, eh?! But what I'm planning on doing, is writing off certain days, e.g. the works do, Christmas day, etc. I know now in advance that I'm not going to be able to stick to a diet on those days, but that's okay, because I'm going to be back on the diet on the other days. And I refuse to beat myself up about it.
It's not falling off the horse if you know in advance you're going to have to gracefully climb down in the future, for a little bit, then get back on again and trot off. That's how I'm looking at it anyway.
Do you live with anyone? Maybe you could get them to hide all of the bad food for you and have them in charge of digging it out if visitors drop by! I have no willpower too, and I get my mum to hide everything. She's bloody good at it too - so much so that I've been able to find no chocolate all weekend, despite knowing there is definitely some in the house.
No food suggestions from me, because I think the ones already posted on this thread are pretty good.

My problem is that I have weaned myself off sweet stuff , crisps and pastries and I just know if I eat one or two that will be me done for , I can't just have one or two once I slip back I will carry on and on snacking...
Maybe I could get OH to hide stuff , but he is very ticklish:rotfl: if u know what I mean....
I have tried to change what I eat for the good stuff as a permanent thing and its actually working well and I don't want to backslide....#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

How about fruit kebabs and then to add a touch of sweetness drizzle a little choc over them, not to coat the fruit, really nice.Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes0

Although not really the thing for a slimmers Christmas but can anyone suggest a recipe for a light Christmas pudding (not a sponge one though). I don't really like those rich, dark ones that you get in supermarkets. Something with a lot of fruit and not much suet/fat or breadcrumbs. My grandmother used to make a super one but I never got the recipe and she's not around now to give it to me.0

If you want to have nibbles around, try Ryvita Minis. They are squares of Ryvita - the Thai flavoured ones are great, and I like the Worcester sauce flavour too. Don't be put off by the thought of Ryvita. They are low fat and healthy, but also filling. Much better than crisps etc (and other people will say 'ugh' and leave them for you!)
Protein foods are filling too, so eat chicken drumsticks and smoked salmon with some chopped tomato and cucumber.

If you have a fireplace how about having a bowl of chestnuts? If people drop round you can roast them together.
That's Christmassy and because it takes time to roast each one you only eat half as many than if they were in a bowl for you to pick at all day
Now you can eat twice as much! (kidding) 0
