There are two types of fraud criminals can commit with details that have been compromised. Application Fraud and Account Takeover.
Your personal details can be used to obtain credit cards, store cards, obtain loans, mortgages or open bank accounts (for money laundering purposes). This is known as Application Fraud.
Or
Your Bank Details are used to purchase goods or services on the Internet, by mail order, phone or fax. They could even transfer money out of your account into theirs, or use your details to have new cards/passbooks redirected. This is known as Account Takeover.
Application Fraud. Advice from the ‘Experts’ is to check your Credit Files with ALL three Agencies, Equifax, Experian and Call Credit. If you think about this logically, it’s too late if you spot something untoward on your file.
There are three other things you can do to secure your Credit Files by using the Notice of Correction (NOC) Facility.
It’s a proactive deterrent.
It protects YOU; you can easily prove it wasn’t you who submitted an application for a loan, credit card, store card etc.

- You can, Freeze Your File. Submit NOC letters saying just that. I am freezing my file; do not accept applications on this file. Downside is unfreezing your file.
- You can use the NOC facility to Password protect your credit files. Downside is anyone visiting your file (and only those who are licensed can), will be aware of your Password and applications will take a little longer.
- You can use the Thumbprint System, described at www.freeidprotection.co.uk. The downside is that all applications will be manually processed, therefore may take a little longer.
