Please help -personal favour OFF TOPIC

Hey all,

I'm normally here dishing it out rather than making a request. I know this isn't DFW and I wouldn't normally ask people to do something like this but I count you guys as friends so I hope you'll listen. I'm not asking you to participate unless you want to though, so please don't unless you want to.

Some of you will know that one of the root causes to all of mine and my partner's financial problems was the fire that occurred in the block that housed our bedsit at the time. Although nobody was harmed we had to trash most of our belongings because of fire, smoke damage and the good old-fashioned need to evacuate and find somewhere else to live. I'm not asking for sympathy and never have done. These things happen and are a hazard of this kind of housing.

What I'm not sure I've ever mentioned was the fire service response to our fire. Because the landlord had not fitted sprinklers or a smoke alarm (and because the bottom floor was a paint shop - a whole other thread) firefighters risked their lives to ensure that all of us occupants had evacuated. Luckily we all had and the firefighters were also all safe. Not only did the firefighters put out the fire but they also alerted environmental health and our to the circumstances in which we were living, ensuring that each of us could move on and that we were no longer in danger. I will never forget the words of one of them 'to think that my kids had to live in a s***hole like this would break my heart'

As you may be aware, four firefighter are confirmed to have died in a fire just down the road from me. This deeply afftects me. The thought that one of my kids might die, doing their job and serving other people like these people, breaks my heart. Those missing are sons, brothers, uncles, even daddies.

We are all skint, I am not asking you to donate to the fund, just to ask that if you appreciate the work that firefighters do, and the risks that they take, for the rest of us, please would you take a moment to think of the individuals concerned, the souls who have lost their lives doing their duty, and the families they left behind, and consider posting a message of condolence to show your gratitude and support:

Me too..what really upset me was the fact that they went in as they thought workers were in there....the appalling state of these places that are screwed by the big supermarkets.to supply "cheap food" (or rather fat profits for them...is a total scandal..............i know DFW talks about cheapest options and refers to supermkts but our farm shop is much cheaper than Asda.
Ethical DFW behaviour...a new thread?? as if EVERYONE changed their shopping habits as a protest, perhaps these people wouldn't be exploited, conditions would meet H + S regs and firemen wouldn't be put at risk.
Don't mean to hijack thread by being political...but things are always linked.
  • My husband is a firefighter (Wholetime AND retained) and I never used to worry about him doing his job, until now.

They do have a Benevelont Fund which will help the families (as best they can) and we always give generously to that-who knows, we may need it one day...hopefully not.

I'm glad your family are all safe Silvercharming.

    Thank you everybody.

Isn't it terrible that it takes something so horrific to remind you? There are all kinds of people putting their lives at risk every day to make the rest of ours' lives a little better.

I know what you mean FC. Maybe we should start a DFW politically charged ranting thread?!

I sat & read some of the other messages on the condolence pages when I had left my message.....I cried, and cried again watching the guard of honour for them on the news tonight.

To all who are , or have family who are firefighters, thank you - your work is a valuable part of our society, every big or little thing that you all do.
