At age 4 my daughter was ready to take good care of her first proper doll and adored most of all tiny shoes, nappies and clothes for dressing and undressing her 'baby'. She also enjoyed a crib with those flouncy drapes and a high chair so that her doll was really part of the family.

Cheaper ideas are hair things - bobbles, clips and all sorts of sparkly, fluffy glittery things along with jewellery (the kits where you can lace your own beads are nice) and don't forget high heeled shoes, magic wands and tiaras for dressing up :D

Jewellery boxes are nice; I remember being enchanted by mine - you know the ones where the ballerina spins around and a tune plays when you open the lid.......

I don't know what your budget is, but dolls houses are great and friends and relatives that want to buy things can contribute to cute furniture and fixings for your daughter.

Anything with faeries gets my daughter's vote - from stickers and pens to books and puppets and dressing up clothes.

She also loves her Russian dolls and any amount of pretty boxes and tins to store away her treasures. A Padlock and key is the ultimate luxury if you think your daughter is old enough to take care of the key :)

Maybe you'll like one or two of these ideas. Have fun making your box!

Whatever you do dont go over the top, it is very depressing when the most expensive thing in the box is overlooked for the cheap fairy pencils from poundland!!!

4 year old girls have no concept of value so have no idea if you have spent a fortune and dont really care. So rule of thumb is, if it costs more than pocket money then forget it, it will be forgotten before you can say "happy new year".

My little girl loved anything that involved pink and fairies!! Dressing up accessories (feather boas, cheap jewellery, ballet shoes, fairy wings), art & craft goodies (glitter pens, sequins, basically anything shiny), and as much as I hate it make-up and anything else that makes them feel all pretty and grown up.
  • I don't know what your budget is but how about getting one of those cheap, paint your own chest things (home bargains and argos sell them) then you could paint it and perhaps stick her name on in jewels. Then fill it with pink fairy dressing up outfits, tiaras and necklaces etc, ooh and feather boas! Just a box full of pink sparkly things should go down well!

  • This helps so much! I have a little one who will turn four before x-mas this year and I would really love to get her a whole lot of little things that will keep her occupied and intrigued throught the festive season.
