Ever wanted an Alienware laptop?

Options
Anyone serious about computer gaming, but unwilling to lug their desktop PC around a friend's house for a spot of multiplayer will have considered buying a laptop computer at some point. And almost immediately dismissed the notion upon realising that most of them will never handle the latest hardware-melting 3D games, and that those that do are almost criminally expensive, not to mention obsolete by the time you've first switched them on. ;)

Yes, this problem is neatly sidestepped when everyone has a broadband connection, and can spend the rest of their lives 'plugged in', but what about when you're on holiday? Would an Alienware laptop do?

Well, yes, but then you'd be up to your eyes in debt!

There is, however, another way. A less expensive way. Alienware laptops are in fact merely rebadged and redecorated machines manufactured by Clevo, and several other outfits sell equipment made by this company, at a substantially lower price. Neat, eh?

thanks for that - very interesting!
  • My son was loking at one of these last month but eventually decided they were too much money. Posts excellent but the only problem is that it appears all the Clevo or Sager resellers are American. (Or have I missed something?)

hmm.. the best thing for multiplayer is a SFF computer - get a little shuttle with lots of gaming power and the carry bag to go with it and you've got your moveable gaming...

    Nusystems do Clevo machines.
They are a U.K. based Audio and Multimedia specialist. I bought one of their machines specifically for doing audio production, and on the whole have been pleased. My motherboard went kaput after about 7 months, though this theoretically can happen to anyones machine. That said, they picked it up, and returned the machine within 7-9 days, and it was hunky dory. My mahcine I have to say peforms well, and they will tailor each machine to suit your individual needs. My machine I wanted to be dual boot which they duly set up. They also do tweaks and stuff to optimise your machine for doing audio and multimedia work, but I spose they could probably do some tweaks for gaming if that's what you need.

I found their prices to be not bad for what you are getting - especially considering that they do the tweaks as well. Other companies are doing specialised audio machines that really you would have to sell your house to buy, but new systems for me at the time of purchasing (and I did my homework, I can tell you...) seemed very keen.

My advice though to anyone buying a new laptop would be to go for either a machine with an AMD 64 chip, or a Centrino - don't get a P4. Although still good performance, you will get better performance from the AMDs, and Centrinos provide much more battery power...

    Worth taking a look...
