    I'm probably going to sound really stupid here but for the first answer does anyone else thinks it looks like some kind of bulb???

    Im going with a valve - as it says "old" product as valves are no longer used much these days. For me the centre element is a giveaway, not used in bulbs of any type. Example here

    I think it looks like a heater element for a boiler, is it just my eyes though?!

    A valve and a transistor are two different things. I worked in electronics jobs since i left school im sticking with a valve i seen enough of them :D
