Mercers Debt Collection Agency Say They Are Visiting Me On The 21st!!!

I recieved a card from Mercers saying as they have been unable to contact me by phone, someone will be coming to my home between 8am and 7pm on Saturday the 21st.

Ive rung the man at CAB (who has been writing to them regarding a nominal offer....but received no response)........ he says they might visit or they might not?! Dont let them in, just explain that he is dealing with it.

The debt is with Barclaycard, who've now passed me onto Mercers.

I'd rather hide upstairs and not answer the door to their 'field agent'!!!

Has anyone ever had a visit..........from Mercers in particular??

If i pretend to be out, will they knock on the doors of my neighbours and tell them my problems??

Yes, im scared!

I would personally ring the cab and speak to your case worker again and tell them you are worried and let them sort it out for you

Surely you could go round to a friends house for the day and ignore them.

I work for a Debt Management Company and a lot of my clients get cards like these. I would not worry - Debt Collection Agencies like these send out a lot of cards like these - but it is very rare that someone turns up.

What is the chance of you being in when the person calls? It would cost a lot of money for some one to make a personal visit to you to find that you are not in. It is not a cost effective way of them running a business.

What these cards do is to get people to panic and then call up the collector.

When did the CAB send the offer of payment? Mercers are very slow at responding to letters.

In my experience of sending letters to Mercers the usual time for responding is about 4 weeks.

Mercers is Barclaycard. They will not turn up. They are very poor at responding to letters and only send standard computer generated replies. I'm currently taking a case against Mercers/Barclaycard to the Financial Services Ombudsman . Barclaycard/Mercers complaints by me have received replies from 6 different addresses around the country - am I being synical or are they deliberately trying to be elusive!!
Keep it in writing and send by recorded delivery.

I Had One Of These Cards About Twelve Months Ago And Was Really Worried All Day

But As Everyone Has Said No One Turn's Up

They Just Want To Scare You And If You Are Anything Like Me It Works

    Don't Worry

And If Anyone Did Happen To Turn Up Don't Answer The Door They Can Not Break In, But Some FeeL If A Window Is Open Etc They Can Gain Entry So Be Careful

But I Am Sure No One Will Come

    Thankyou everyone for your replys.

I'm going to try and put it out of my mind..........it seems unlikely that anyone will turn up! (Obviously i'll be careful not to leave the door open on the 21st ......... just in case  .

The man from CAB first wrote to Barclaycard in March.........they ignored his letters and just continued to send me my monthly statements as per normal!
Each time with added interest for non payment.

Its only 2 weeks ago.........I suddenly heard from Mercers regarding these debts.

Hi Ebsay - perhaps you would benefit by reading the Office of Fair Trading guidelines on Home Visits by Debt Collectors, which can be found at the following link:

Whilst I agree with other posters, in that MERCERS (whom I have also had the displeasure of having to deal with) probably won't visit you, it is worth bearing in mind that:
    - They have NO automatic right to enter your house.
    - They MUST leave when you ask them to.
    - MERCERS MUST make the purpose of any such visit clear.
    - They are NOTallowed to visit you at your workplace, unless you have agreed.
    - They MUST NOT act in a threatening or intimidating manner.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.
