What would you do?

Options
Earlier this year I decided that I wanted to go to university in 2008 to do the degree in Child Nursing. As there are only 25 placements to do this course locally they take things like experience into consideration so I decided to try looking for a part time job which would help me with this.

I had an interview on Tuesday for a position looking after a special needs child at the local school which went really well. It is for 10 hours a week and is only until the holidays as the child will be moving after that. By the time an enhanced disclosure is done it may only be for about 4 weeks (40 hours) in total. In anticipation of possibly getting the job I called the Tax Credits helpline today to see if I would get help with childcare costs. As it is less than 16 hours I will not get any childcare costs paid for HOWEVER they will take my earnings into consideration and reduce my Tax credits. So a no win situation.

Another school is looking for a similar post covered starting next term but instead of being two full days the hours are split over five afternoons of two hours at a time. And instead of being a single child it is in a special needs unit so I would be working with more children. This other school is 15 miles away so I would also have fuel costs too. As we live where we live the bus goes round all the little villages to get there and takes one and a half hours which would mean 5 hours of childcare a day for two hours work.

My question is would you take the first job if it meant gaining the experience to then go on and train for the job I want to do or is it not worth it.

And do you think it is even worth me applying for the second job.

First of all...I would get your application sent away straight away. The sooner the better in my experience. I am a childrens nurse and I didnt have much experience when I was accepted although I had recently graduated from college in nursery nursing.
You obviously have children, I would say that that counts for a lot experience wise, you are able to sympathise with parents etc. Dealing with crisis situations with your wee ones aswell.
I cant really offer any advice with the job situation as I dont know your financial situation. What about doing some local childminding or after school care at a club/creche etc?

Thanks Hoopylass. They did say that having children helped. I have the application here on my desk but not sure what to put on the statement of support. Also haven't been able to get hold of my old boss yet about a reference. Was supposed to be going to see him tomorrow but will have to cancel that as the car still isn't back from the garage after failing its MOT yesterday.

Well I have been offered the local job and have decided to take it, as the time we need a childminder for shouldn,t cost too much. Just have to wait on the disclosure coming through before I get a start date. Still not sure about the one for next term. Might fill out the application anyway and if I get an interview I could always ask if there is any flexibility with which hours are worked.

Hi, I agree that you should fill out the application form and if (when) you get an interview you could see whether there is any flexibility with the hours. Sometimes if they really want you for the job they are prepared to do that.

Apply for the second job - you don't have to accept it if you get offered it, but if you don't apply, you don't get that choice!

With each case, although you will not necessarily be better off, due to costs and reductions in tax credits etc, if you are no worse off, then it is still in your favour because you are gaining the experience you want.

Whichever you choose, it is short term, so although not perfect is a step in the right direction.

Good luck, and get that application filled in. Right now. Are you listening, get filling it in (trying to do my assertive bit here!):rotfl:

I realised that. It is the nursing one which is on my desk. The job one is online so going to do that this weekend when I can get peace from the kids.
