Very old left over chicken.

Options
Bought a whole chicken on Saturday last week. Cooked it for 7 hours in the slow cooker and used it for sarnies this week. Plus made some stock and a soup with the left over ones and skin.

I now have two legs and a wing left. Will these still be ok to eat? And what can I do with them? I'm not keen on legs and wings unless they come coated in a nice marinade and are fried. I was wondering if maybe I could chuck them in a pan of water and make some more stock out of them for another soup as I'm stocking the freezer with meals I can take to work and microwave. Soup seems ideal for this, and I do love HM soup!

I wouldn't eat them now. What you should have done is freeze them earlier in the week until you were ready to use them. I know it's a terrible waste but you'll have them off your mind once theyre gone and hopefully you won't do that again, says she who has had to throw food away on many occasions

I think you might regret eating six day old chicken. Better to waste it now than spend the w/e being poorly!

Smell it. If it doesn't smell off then cut a little bit and stick it in the microwave for a few seconds until it heated through, this will kill any nasties. Now taste. If it tastes okay then cut the rest up, fry it in butter and stick it on a sarnie.

Btw, what have you got against the cats?

Sometimes you have to throw away a little food. Maybe you're getting too carried away with saving money if you'd risk your health.

The cats are alright. They aren't really into showing much affection though. We rescued Esme from a den she'd made at the bottom of our garden to give birth to Pud and Spock in. Esme was probably once someone's cat as she doesn't mind being around us. But Spock and Pud just hang around eating our food. Actually Spock will allow us to fuss him, but Pud doesn't want to know.

You’re not really risking your health. The bacteria that develop in cooked chicken that has been left lying around are not the real nasties that you find in raw chicken. They just start digesting the food and breaking it down. As long as it smells like chicken and tastes like chicken then it is probably okay to eat. If you want to avoid any risk at all then heat it up thoroughly before you eat it.

HIT: There's no doubt cats have strong constitions. Whenever I make chicken stock I leave it in the fridge over night for the fat to solidify. It then gets skimmed off and mixed with other food scraps and put out on the bird table for the tweeties. Unfortunately, before the starlings have had a chance, Herbert, the tabby from next door –yes he is called Herbert, jumps off the garden wall and makes a beeline for it.

I think he has a thing about chicken fat because no matter how many times I shoo him off he’s back on the table by the time I get back inside. He will eat the whole lot without a second thought but it can’t be doing him any harm because he hasn’t keeled over yet. I may be wrong but I think I read somewhere that cats don’t get heart disease. In Herbert’s case, that’s a bit of a pity ;)

Nice picks by the way. I'm very fond of cats generally (even Herbert) but why do people have to give them such silly names? :D
