Fish tank

HI,
I may buy a fish tank soon, and wondered if anyone had any recommendations for a good price!
It will prob be for tropical fish, so any price advice re filtration, heating, lighting etc would be gratefullly received.
As I have young kids, I may do as I have in the past and put up a mesh fire guard around it to stop them getting hold of the cabinet.

I prefer the taller styles to the traditional ones, so aeration needs to be good.

Any thoughts?

Ta, Mumx

I shopped about for a good while before i decided to purchase my tropical fish tank - 3 foot. for £236 all in. That included everything I needed to get started; lights, heater, gravel, background etc and a £23 voucher for fish! There were some cheaper, but there are a lot of different cabinets available, and mine is like a piece of furniture made to order in beech, oak, or mine is silver effect.
Its money well spent though so dont hesitate!

    Try eBay.

Look for something local since you will need to collect .
Some bargains are available including the column tanks - round and hexagonal
I've seen new, secondhand and complete setups over the last month or so.

    Hiya
I won a bi-orb a year ago and I love it. Its low maintanence and great for starting out. It also doubles up as lamp. Try http://www.bi-orb.com
(By the way this isn't the cheapest site for them its just to give you an idea of what I am on about)

  • Another Biorb vote, we bought one a couple of weeks ago for our son's birthday. It cost £89, looks good and is low maintenance.

    Thanks for all your replies,
Did a silly thing today. I'll tell you how it started. On Friday we inherited a fish in a bowl. I've always had tropical fish in the past, and intended to eventually set up an aquarium at this house.
Anyway, today we all went to buy Goldie (the new fish, are you keeping up?) a friend. We bought Rainbow, they are getting along well. The kids think Goldie is showing Rainbow some tricks by swimming on it's side......I don't have the heart to explain that could be a problem. I digress.
Here's the silly bit.... we saw a lovely fish tank and bought it. Had I come home first and thought about it, I'd have been far too stingey. But it is lovely. We saw tha biorbs which are very snazszy but wanted something a bit bigger. This one is a corner one with a curved front panel of glass, looks very good. The cabinet is okay, fits in with the room, and obviously very sturdy as it's made to go with the tank. But we SAVED £40 by buying the two together (for £380). It came with everything except gravel and fish.
It's filling up as I type, I just wish I'd followed the recommendation to wash the gravel first...you can imagine. Still, the swish filter thingy will sort out the water in no time!!
Penny-Pincher, hope your dd manages to save enough for the change over in animal preference soon! She could always have both.......

we got a fish tank starter kit for about £75 from pets at home about 7 yr ago and nothing ever survives in it we have spent pounds and pounds on every tropical fish in the shop over the years and then went onto cold water fish but still had no luck it is full of water in the corner bubbling away with no fish in it!!!!!!! we have tried everything it is not as easy as it looks and they say done put anything in until it has been up and running for 4 weeks to get the water to the correct environment (it creates its own eco system)but even though we did evertyhing to the book we never had any luck we have an airiater at back and fluval filter in one corner but i think youd be better to invest in an under gravel one to have more luck than us!! the kids love it but all the fish only live a couple of weeks on average and then die on us!! we did have a large angel fish once that lived about 9 mths but that is the best we did!! we have had advice from four shops over the years and so many staff we lost count but still dead fish constantly from day 1 they always blame it on our water being deathly but we do not do anything but what we are suppose too!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
