Natwest grrrr

I went BR last week after having opened a basic account with Natwest.
I spoke to several operators at Natwest who all said that somebody would talk to me before taking any action on my account. This was back up by the branch manager who also said that he didn't deal with bankruptcies but just sent the letters on to head office.
Today, I get a letter to tell me that they have not paid my rent and suggesting I didn't have enough in the account. I phone the branch who say the account is frozen and I have to speak to the phone number on the letter I recevied. I phone the number, they say I have not activated telephone banking so there is nothing they can do!
Has anybody else experienced incompetenece like this or is it just my branch?
Having just got out of hospital after sugery, going to my branch or even dealing with stress to this level is really more than I need right now!

I've heard of Natwest doing this to other people, despite being told it wouldn't happen.
The staff do not seem to know enough about bankruptcy, and the policy re: basic accounts and BR seems to change depending on who you speak to, and where in Natwest they work.

At the minute, I've been passed from pillar to post and am awaiting the branch manager to return my call. Last time I spoke to him, he knew NOTHING about the Natwest policy on bankrupts and said I should phone their lending department as all he does it pass the letters to head office!
Do bank managers know anything these days or are they, as I suspect, just glorified Sales Managers? Everytime I visit the branch, they just try to sell me something!
So, I'm trying hard to get my account unfrozen so I can pay my rent, then I shall empty the account and go find a bank who has a clue! I'm told Nationwide are good, any offers of advice on them or others?
Oh, forgot to mention - they also charged me £38 for this priveledge! Manager just called... on phone right now....0 -
Have you looked at the final page of this document:
http://www.fsa.gov.uk/pubs/public/bank_account.pdf
It lists all the basic accounts available, what facilities you get, and their policy on undischarged bankrupts.
Basically, you are pretty much limited to:
Barclays - Cash Card Account
Co-operative Bank - Cashminder
Nationwide Building Society - FlexAccount Cash Card
As far as I know only the Co-op one offers a debit card.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Just got a call back, they are happy to let me keep the account, it seems one department were waiting for paperwork from another and in the meantime suspended my account without telling me!
Now, 2 days after having surgery, I have to get myself to the branch to take out some cash and pay my rent!0 -
Sorry to hear about that Toad. Can I borrow your strimmer for the weekend? As I need to tidy the garden up for Jack Party.:j0
