UPDATE:
Great Universal hiked the price of their best bundle from £589 to £719. HOWEVER, if you buy the items in the bundle seperately, the total comes to £599 which is only £10 more than I paid. After the various cashback methods described below, the price you pay will be no more than £415 which is still an excellent deal considering the RRP of the PS3 alone is £425.
Hey all,
If anybody is interested in the Sony PlayStation 3 (released last week), then hopefully this will help you save a large amount of money. To qualify, you must not have shopped with Great Universal before.
The RRP of the PS3 is £425, with games between £40-£50 and extra controllers £35 each. This bundle should allow you to get the console, two games, and an extra controller for just over £400, almost £25 less than the RRP of the console alone.
This link will take you to the original thread where I saw the details, but I will try and summarise them in this thread too: http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=493523
The retailer used for this bundle is Great Universal. However, without the cashback discounts, GU's PS3 bundles are extremely overpriced. To get the bundle for £400 do the following:
1) Sign up with QuidCo, then use this page to get to Great Universal: http://www.quidco.com/great-universal-essentials/
QuidCo will give you 6% cashback.
2) There are several bundles at GU... the one I went for was the £589 bundle with "Resistance: Fall of Man", "MotorStorm", and an extra controller. This can be found by searching for "ps3", then browsing through a few pages. The cashback discounts still apply for other bundles.
If and only if this will be the first time you've ordered something from GU, you will receive a 20% discount. Apparently they will charge you the £589, then credit 20% of that back later. This page outlines details about the 20% offer: http://www.greatuniversal.com/AgNet/content/help_20off_aw05.aspx?brand=GU&cat_id=17258&zone_id=0&prod_id=0
3) If you open a store credit account with GU to pay for your order, you will receive 10% cashback on everything over the first £150, which can be paid to you by cheque. The interest free period lasts for about 40 weeks, but you can pay up in full after opening the credit account by card. I still have a 3% cashback offer with my Morgan Stanley card so will be using that for an extra discount!
Details about GU cashback are here: http://www.greatuniversal.com/AgNet/content/help_cashback_aw05.aspx?brand=GU&cat_id=17002&zone_id=0&prod_id=0
And now for the math:
£589 x 0.06 = £35.34 cashback from QuidCo.
£589 x 0.20 = £117.80 cashback from 20% first order offer (GU).
(589 - 117.80 - 150) x 0.10 = £32.12 from GU's 10% cashback scheme.
Total Cashback = £185.26
Total Cost of Bundle = 589 - 185.26 = £403.74
This is a total saving of about £140 (RRP for bundle items bought seperately is £540).
I hope this is of some use to people. I very much doubt that the PS3 will see a price drop for a while, particularly as Sony is selling each console at a loss. I imagine this will probably be the best deal for a long time.
* Make sure you use the QuidCo link.
* Make sure you haven't purchased from Great Universal before, or you lose the 20% (get somebody else to order for you?).
* Make sure you open a store credit account.
As I said earlier, I didn't come up with this. All credit should go to the guy who created this thread: http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=493523

Also, if you can't get the 20% discount and want to buy the PS3 elsewhere, then I would suggest that you try Virgin MegaStores. If you have a Virgin Credit Card, they will give you a 10% discount on the PS3. They will also give you that discount if you are a student with a valid NUS card.0

Are you sure Virgin will give you 10% for NUS and 10% for using a Virgin credit card? I thought you could only use one at a time?0

HMV don't honor nus discount on hardware0

well looks like GUS have latched onto this. I've been planning to get this since last week after seeing the thread on avforums. However logging ontot heir site today the 589 bundles have gone
the only equivalent they have now is at £719!!!!!
oh well snooze you loose0 -
Ah that's a shame. With the £719 bundle you could still get it down to £490, but this is much less of a saving.0

It's worth mentioning that they quote 2 weeks for delivery.
It's such a good deal that I bit the bullet and gonna cross my fingers it arrives quickly.0 -
Hey all,
While it was noted that Great Universal hiked the price of the £589 bundle up to £719, if you buy the items in the bundle seperately, it will only cost £599 (remember that this is before the 20%, 10%, and 6% cashbacks).
Add these to the shopping cart:
£519 PS3 + Resistance: Fall of Man
£45 Motorstorm
£35 Additional Controller
£599 TOTAL
With the 20%, 10%, and 6% discounts described in the first post, you can get this down to no more than £415, which is only about £10 more than I paid for the same stuff. This is still a fantastic deal considering that at most stores it costs £425 to buy the PS3 on its own.0 -
i read somewhere that gu want to get the bailiffs in coz they demanded full payment afterwards0
