Bunion removal operation

I am posting on behalf of a friend, they are due to have a bunion removed this week and thought they would need about 2 weeks off work, but someone said they should expect to be off for weeks and they are a bit worried now.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of the operation and how long it took before you were able to return to work.

Depends how they perform the op?

My wife was off work for eight weeks; they broke the bone in her foot and shaved off the necessary to remove the bunion...........plastercast jobbie.

Thank you chuckles, I just called them and they don't know how its being done (:doh:

) but she is going in to hospital for 3 days so have warned her its likely to be longer than she expected.

Ah, three days means they're gonna break her foot, correct the problem and then pin it.

She'll be in a lot of pain for a while but it'll be worth it in the long run.

At least a month off of work though..........my wife had metal pins inserted but I believe they use a different technique these days.

hi all,
my friend had a bunion removed last year and she was off work for just over 8 weeks. Apparently the pain is unbelievable and as a result she has refused to have the other foot done. Not trying to scaremonger but thats how it was for her. hope it goes well for your friend but i think she will be off work longer than she thinks though.

Thank you both, they cancelled her yesterday, but then called this morning that her op was back on so she went in today.

They are now saying that there are two bunions on each foot

if they decide to do both then its really painful :eek: will wait to see what happens tomorrow.

She's gonna need some very strong painkillers

I can't see they'll do both feet otherwise she'll be wheelchair-bound for weeks?

I had bunions removed 10 years ago on both feet, i used crutches to get around. I was in plaster for 8 weeks. No pain though so i really think it depends on the person.

Well they only did one foot afterwards and she is not finding it too bad. She was hoping to come home today, but as it was swollen they couldn't put the plaster on, her husband is more stressed out than she is

He arrived at the hospital to see her after the op and had a nose bleed so they had to sort him out :rolleyes:
