I've been trying to use up the stuff in my cupboards and have found... a giant tin of German sauerkraut (sp?)!!! The mind boggles...
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can cook with it???

yes, I do. Us Dutch people cook it with potatoes in one pot, mash together and serve with smoked sausage or other sausages and gravy, yummy!!0

Wow, that was a quick reply, thanks :-)
Is there any chance you can post a more detailed recipe?Snootchie Bootchies!0 -
Sorry, I don't do exact. We are a family of 4 so would boil about 1 bag of potatoes (2.5kg) and one jar of sauerkraut. (how big is your tin?) put potatoes in pot, I put sauerkraut on top, put lid on, bring to boil, turn the heat down, cook until potatoes are soft, drain and mash sauerkraut and potatoes together with some butter, salt and pepper, some milk, don't make it too sloppy, just roughly mashed. Either cook sausages or heat up smoked sausage, make gravy and that is that.
Lol about the quick reply, only seen the time your thread, just seen sauerkraut, and not many people eat it here in this country. Dutch and Germans and Polish people eat it lots. I suppose Gillian Mckeith made it more popular here, as it is very healthy for you.0 -
Do you have to drain or wash tinned/bottled sauerkraut before eating it?0

Sauerkraut - Yummy
I put the whole lot in a pan add a tiny amount of either water or sometimes wine vinegar and let it very gently steam through, with Bratwurst or Bockwurst or bacon bits or fried ham it is ambrosia. Serve with German Mustard (zenf) and mash - Sticks to yer ribs and warms you through. The quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...0 -
I love saurkraut. I usually chop up and fry an onion until soft, add some bits of bacon fry until brown and then add a couple of dessertspoons of flour and cook for 2 or 3 mins ( to get rid of the flour taste). add your tin of saurkraut and about 1/2 pint chicken stock, or water and stock cube. If you have any other meat in the fridge, chorzoim, salami, the german sausage stuff, ham, chop that and add it in as well, cook for 20/ 30 mins. The gravy will have thickened up with flour. Serve with creamy mashed potatoes, enjoy.
My dad used to swear by it for a bit of a detox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
I love saurkraut too!
Has anybody made their own saurkraut? I bought a bottle from the supermarket but it does not taste as good as the ones I tried in Germany.0 -
However you cook it , if you add a chopped apple it helps reduce the sourness, if that's what you want.NSD 0/150
