Lidl motorcycle gear

Options
I've just got a scooter and need to get some riding gear... anyone seen this stuff in store today? Any good or it is worth me spending more and going upmarket? I'm particularly thinking about the jacket and trousers, but also looking at the locks and trickle charger too.

Finally, most of the helmets I've seen up to now are priced in three figures, so can a £25 one like the one shown here really be any good?

  • I saw this gear last time they were doing it, the quality was not bad (I'm a former scooter rider); my brother is an experienced motorcyclist, he's just bought one of the tank bags today and says the quality is reasonable for the money. For me, a spine protector is a must-have - £15 very well spent.

    In a word "NO"

Please don't be tempted by one of these cheap helmets, they are most probably imported from China, and they are cheap for a reason. No acu gold stamp,no Snell test. You only get one head and while as a biker I hope never to come off mine,my current helmet is an Arai,£400 worth. This is one area you should never skimp on.Go for a quality brand,Arai,Shoei,Shark etc.and make sure it fits properly.
Hope you enjoy many accident free miles on your scooter.

    I would agree with titewad.
I have a £400 helmet too and a £100 back protector as these items can save your life.

I would say a £15 back protector is better than none at all but not as good as a decent brand like KNOX.

If you can't afford proper gear then put it on your "Xmas list" or "birthday list".
Ask all your friends and family to put money towards decent gear and then buy it when you have enough.

If you genuinely can't afford decent gear then you really need to think about whether it's worth riding whilst being inadequately protected.

Things like the socks, thermals, tank bag etc. are probebly very good value for money.

Yeah... the cheap stuff that doesn't provide protection is pretty good for the money, things like the bike cover, tank bag etc etc

But go to an actual bike clothing shop where you'll get a much better selection of helmets and fitted jackets. You can pick up a Shark helmet for about 80quid if i remember, properly fitted and high quality clothes and helmet is an area where you should NEVER skimp :(

    Yep, good point.
If you want armour to do it's job then it needs to be in right places.
I just bought a 2 piece suit and I can feel the armour moulding round the right places (shoulders, knees etc.)
Obviously it's not going to work as well if it's sliding around.

It's better to go to a store where you can try on different makes and models.

I bought boots, sox and a motorbike cover yesterday - the zip on the boots broke almost straight away - so they are going back today. There is a lace up version which might be better?

We know what happens to people who stay in the middle of the road. They get run over.

im a motorcyclist and wouldnt touch a cheap helmet, its not worth your life
because its a good deal, in fact it should be illegal to sell cheap helmets
that dont have the acu gold stamp or Snell test labels its just rubbish.
you maybe be on a small powered scooter, but if you come off at 30 miles an hour or collide with a car, if you live you will wish you bought proper gear.
good helmets arai shoei etcas for the protective clothing i wonder how long it would remain water proof and keep you warm, i have doubts
frank thomas clothing is excillent. be wise ride safe stay alive and enjoy motorcycling summer is coming get out there RIDE.....

Thanks for all the replies - especially all the info on helmets. To the uninitiated like me a helmet is a helmet is a helmet - now I know this is not so. Last night I read up on the ACU Gold Stamp and Snell testing, and today I went to a bike shop where they explained in detail the difference between polycarbonate, fibreglass and thermoplastic helmets. The most comfortable lid I've tried so far was a £200 Shoei, which is the one I'll get if I don't see anything else over the next few days.
