I need to sort a room. Ideas

I find it easy to sort the bedroom, lounge, kitchen and so on but my study is defeating me. I keep my books in there and they are all tidy and on shelves. My limited ed teddies are sitting on the top of the tall fitted units. It is a room into which I put `things`

I keep a house file and that is ok

I do a lot with my computer and generate a lot of paper and it ends up in heaps. I also have quite a few hobbies and all my bits are in there, mostly in cupboards and that is ok

It`s the paper and other bits that are annoying me. I want to make them vanish but I can`t do that. I have 4 heaps in sight

Oh well I think I need to put a bit of feng shui back in there. Maybe a vase of flowers (silk) or I might move a tiffany flowery lamp so I can see it when I walk past the door but that still leave the heaps. How can I make then disappear from sight without them being unaccessable

Hi Kittie, I know how you feel! Those heaps get everywhere. How big are the heaps? Maybe organise papers into boxfiles or those accordian files so that things are readily accessible. Would there be room to put a few on a shelf? If there's loads you could use a large-ish cardboard / storage box and fashion some kind of dividers to keep things organised and maybe hide the box under the desk?? One of my favourites is to stuff things in labelled cardboard envelope files and cram them on a shelf. Shoe boxes for bits and bobs? Sorry if this is not much use - I have no right to comment really considering the state of my study at the moment!

I moved the lamp and that has lifted the energy in the room a bit. I think I will tackle the papers right now as I have a couple of shoe boxes. It`s a bit of a glory hole room but unfortunate that it is just by the front door and the hall has no light so we keep the doors open all the time. It doesn`t help that I keep my bike behind the door. lol

It`s strange but none of it bothered me until a couple of days ago, when I got the spring feeling. I have been really busy in the kitchen today, golden oil cleaning.

I have got stuff on ebay and collected another lot but those darn papers, ughh!!

Get a shelf or bin to sort the papers. I feel the same way about my office. I tried to keep all papers in a square basket.

If you can split the papers down into categories,smaller amounts can be labelled by using a big bulldog clip,attach a brown paper label to it saying (in my case filing,To do,pending,whatever) you could hang it off a ribbon,and atach to nails on the wall .Bigger amounts, i would get some cheap A4 filing boxes from somewhere like ikea.If you have papers stored on a shelf,and need to prop them up,bizarrely, a brick wrapped in wrapping paper makes an efficient and cheap bookend-just dont drop it on your head.

I have decided:

I always have piles of things and papers and I admit it so I am going to look for the prettiest and most tactile baskets I can find. I`ll have them on show and at least I`ll divide my stuff into one of 3 baskets. I`ll try to get really girly baskets because a study can so quickly look `hard`

I bought some silver coloured boxes with lids on from Tchibo when they were on special offer and keep them at the side of my desk.

I keep all my OU study books in one and just other papers in the other. Any "active" pieces of paper I keep on the top and attach a note about why it is there - ie, bill to pay or fill in form and send off, etc.

When the papers one gets full, I blitz it ruthfully taking anything out that is just rubbish and shred it up to go on the compost (v. therapeutic)!

You need a filing cabinet. they're not just for work you know

Seriously you can often pick them up cheap second hand and it does make a big difference having a proper home filing system. You can use it to keep all those recipes you gather up, clippings on possible holidays, DIY stuff you might do etc etc. It might seem a bit extreme and you think you'd never fill it but you'd be surprised!

Or ask on freecycle??

I have a filing cabinet but its full up:eek: so there's no room for my study papers!

The filing cabinet is a really good idea - just don't make the mistake I did and get one with only two drawers. I'm going to have to buy another two drawer one now because I've filled the first one up. Once you start filing you just can't stop. It's perfect for office stuff as well as all the other bits and pieces that grow in wobbly piles and sit there staring at you!

I really couldn't do without my filing cabinet/suspended files. I keep all my bank statements, home accounts, guarantees, receipts, instructions, car gubbins and everything else in it but I also have an 'in-tray' to throw bills in then once a week I go through it and file, reply or throw whatever is in there so I start each week fresh.
