You should make stew, because it's easy, really tasty and once you've done that it'll give you the confidence to make other stuff. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0

Any advice as to what went wrong with my stew anyone?
I made pork in apple juice with a splash of white wine (no cider in the house). Tossed the meat in seasoned flour and browned it, then chopped veg, apples, meat and hot liquid into the pot, along with a little cornflour mixed with water. Cooked for about 10 hours on Auto.
The meat was lovely and tender but the veg were crunchy and the gravy was awful - thin, watery and with a sort of sour, stale flavour.
What went wrong? And are there any really truly foolproof recipes I can try to get my confidence up?That man is richest whose pleasures are cheapest. Henry David Thoreau0 -
I am very very very excited as I have just turned on (not in a sexual way Lol) my very first slow cooker. After searching some recipes, looking at what I had and based loosely on a recipe a friend cooker for us in the summer I have added the following to my cooker:
Lots of carrots, chopped
2 onions chopped
3 tins tomatoes
few sprigs rosemary from garden
Pork chops (browned on cooker, fat removed)
Sliced chorizo
stock made from pork stock cubes
a 'glug' of red wine
it is my intention to add 2 tins cannellini beans about 1/2 before serving and dish up with crusty french bread (reduced to 22p in Tesco last night!)
black pepper.
I'll let you know what it was like - I can't wait until dinner time !0 -

I suspect the apple juice and wine might have made it taste bitter as you describe - possibly cider vinegar instead of wine might have been better? Did you add any sugar in to counteract the acidity of the juice? As other posters have advised, there are recipes on here that are tried and tested. Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!
