Have a look at the actual base ie the bit that heats up. It should tell you the capacity of the pot. It might tell you the make too. If we have that info, we might be able to help more. However, saying that, you should be able to do things like braising steak or pork chops in tomatoes etc in it, which should be enough for 4.

(As you may probably have gathered, I have 3 slow cookers of varying sizes, so might be able to help here. Yours sounds suspiciously like one of mine)

I had a slow cooker, pre children and used it a lot. Once we got past two children, it wasn't big enough. At the time, it was THE slowcooker, the only one I ever saw widely available. Beige on the outside I think, and a brown crockpot.

I had that one, hated the damn thing. So glad they have updated slow cookers and made them bigger too.

How are they better, Tiff? Not sure I would use one now? I make stews and soups a couple of times a week but without meat now. Bigger would be better though.

When I make a meat and veg curry, I fill my 6.5 L one to capacity and then there's lots left over to freeze. In fact, had some for tea, made last week and bagged up in portion sizes for freezer.

For me, my new one is better because it has an oval shape and is much bigger than the original one I had, so I can cook joints. The old one I had, I cant remember the make, never seemed to cook veg properly whereas I've never had a problem cooking anything with my MR one. The new ones also look better I think.

I wonder if the older ones referred to above are the Tower slow cookers. I had one of those too (free gift from a catalogue) and it was beige outside with a brown crockpot ... looked like a souffle dish! ... In fact I still have the dish somewhere but long since got rid of the base as I rarely used it and it was pretty crap to be honest

I'm loving my new MR 6.5L though ... thanks to Tiff and Ticklemouse's recommendations :D

That was it! The Tower slow cooker. Ah, I see things have moved on... But would one be any use to a vegetarian family of six?

I guess it depends how big it is as I think they made them in 2 or 3 different sizes. I know mine was the compact one, but there were only 2 of us at the time, and it didn't have any settings on it either, but I believe they made a family size one which would probably be ok for casseroles/curries etc.

No, I mean would I use a NEW one or would it become a cupboard dweller. No good for puddings for us because we like rice pudding with skin, bread abd butter pudding with crunchy top etc.

I started on the Slow Cooker Recipe thread and got to thinking I MUST have one but only got to page 19! Then I remembered I can't even be bothered to eat breakfast before I leave for work let alone all that peeling and chopping!

I would probably use it to make stew (ratatouille type I make on hob) and soup but I'm wondering what else it would be good for if I'm not cooking meat.

So ...I've looked at the 3in1 cooker and considering that because we eat a lot of rice and whenever anyone but me :A cooks in the microwave, they make such a mess. I've always thought a rice cooker is something I could live without but maybe if it was also a slowcooker, it would be worth having .

Or is it one of those things destined for the cupboard? How long does it take to cook rice? And what is the shortest time for my cauldron of veg stew? I'm not a morning person so it would mean preparing the night before (and remembering to turn it on in the morning!) or putting on straight from school and cooking 3 hours.
