Free Range or Value eggs?

I am desperately trying to stick to my grocery challenge budget.

However, I have a dilemma! Should I buy free range eggs or value eggs?

I always used to buy value everything, but then started to think about the poor chick chicks and started to buy free range. But now I am trying to budget should I go back to value eggs?

If I am honest I can't taste the difference! Usually they are in cakes, scrambled or have pepper on!

I read somewhere that free range chickens are actually kept in huge chicken sheds with a couple of little holes for doors so they can get outside, but most don't actually see daylight at all. I reckon the only way to get proper free-range is to buy from a farm where you can see how the chickens live.

Mightymo you have to evaluate whether the extra expense is worth it.

That's what I do now Troo - they sell locally produced (laid?) ones at my local butcher, from a farm in a village a couple of miles away. I don't actually buy meat (veggie hubby) so only go into the butcher for the eggs! Must admit the bloke with the cleaver is a bit scary  .

Yes the eggs are a bit of an extravagance, but my conscience is clear anyway :D .
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

These eggs are usually ... or should be ... sold as barn eggs, not free range, and while I agree that their living conditions are often less than desirable, they're a hell of a lot better off than those poor battery hens.

I guess for people where money is tight then it's a reasonable compromise to buy barn eggs instead. It's just a shame that supermarkets slap such a high price on free range but you can usually buy them from local suppliers much cheaper, and often cheaper than supermarket value (battery eggs). I pay £1 a dozen from my local butcher for large free range eggs, and I know the farm they come from so I know they truly are "free range" hens.

I got hens in May and haven't regretted it for a moment. Free range eggs are better than value - the hens can at least move but it is true that they may still have miserable lives. As has been said, eggs from the bloke up the road is best.

Well, not best - best is your own! By the way, I have a small town garden with neighbours either side. Hens are easy to look after, cheap to feed and won't annoy your neighbours. Our start up costs were £150 but if you're handy with wood it can be a few quid.

Also (you can see I'm a chicken bore) hens are fascinating. I didn't realise how they have such funny ways and engaging personalities. They even put themselves to bed at night!

You're not wrong there Magentasue ... I could write pages about the antics my hens used to get up to, including one particular "cannibalistic" hen that used to come in and nick scraps of cooked chicken off people's plates :rotfl:

Each one has it's own personality and they are highly intelligent too! I really miss having them around and can't wait till I can move to somewhere with a garden again.

Free Range all the time for me.

Does seem to be some difference in supermarket prices. I know Asda are close to a quid for 6 while Tesco are 84p.

Might see if I can source a more 'local' source like mentioned above.
