Anodised saucepans

Options
(Hope I've spelt this right)
I need to replace ancient saucepans soon, so far I have only had non stick, which always comes off eventually. I have seen the thread on stainless steel pans, but also saw some anodised (sp?) in Asda. They were in their "Special" range so were more pricey than the others. Apparently they are also non stick but it is supposed to stay on!
Has anyone used these? And are they any good?

I had some anodised saucepans a few years ago but the surface was destroyed by the dishwasher.

They were really good saucepans and they looked good too...shame the dishwasher didn't think the same

If I could be bothered to wash the pots by hand, then I'd definitely get another set - as it is, we've now got stainless steel (which is a bit of a pain to wash by hand, so thank goodness for the Dishwasher!!).

    Cheers
    D.
  • Thanks, the thing that concerns me most is the handles I've seen on stainless steel pans are also steel, and that they would get hot. Do they? (Visions of me dropping full pans of food!)

I won a set of hard anodised pans worth £120! I would never have paid for them at that price but I have to say they are the best pans I have ever owned and nothing sticks to them. Even if I burn something a quick soak seems to float it all off.

Meyer Select do some great stainless steel pans which have special stuff on the handles so you don't burn yourself. The lids are glass, and have strainers built in, eliminating the need for a colander. I have a set and they are great. Don't buy them full price, wait for Debenhams sale when they normally have a set for a bargain price.

Don't confuse these with the cheaper coloured Select saucepans.

They also do a hard anodised range, but I haven't tried them so I can't comment.

Finally, we recently invested in a Woll pan. This is the best investment we have EVER made. It has a detachable handle, goes on the hob or in the oven, is deep, and we use it for almost everything - frying, casseroling, baking. It doesn't go in the dishwasher, but nothing sticks to it and it cleans SO easily, I've never had to scrape or scrub. We saw them at a show, and bought the "if you only buy one of these, buy this one". It's 28cm wide, 7.5 cm deep . It's easy to get on the internet, prices fo vary considerably - but they do a lot of home & garden type shows, and they are cheapest of all there.

    Hope that helps

I've not noticed them getting particularly hot, except right up near the pan. Not sure how come but the rest is ok (obviously as long as the handle isn't over a heat source).

The thing I do notice is that with the lid (we have glass lid with round steel handle on top) that the handle on the top of the lid gets hot!! Especially if using the lid to strain the water out of the pan - the steam seems to escape and heats up the lid handle - Been caught out several times on that

Ive just ordered some stainless steel with non stick interiors - they have cool touch handles as i know some of the stainless steel handles do get hot.

I did have a lovely set of tefal non-stick, but the dishwasher has ruined the coating on the inside - so when i get the new set I shall be washing by hand to keep them longer (even though things say they are DW safe)

Do you put them in the dishwasher? The pans at Asda are (so they say) dishwasher safe. They also say you can use metal utensils in them and they won't scratch. Have you tried this?

The only true hard anodised pans I've ever found that are dishwasher-safe come from Lakeland (where else?). However, they are pretty pricey. I'm just trying to convince OH that we should set aside some money from his bonus for them... http://www.lakeland.co.uk/product.aspx/!11006_11007

Mine always go in the dishwasher but I don't use metal utensils on them. I have found the coating has come off in places. Mine had a 25 year guarantee so I could send them back if I was bothered but it has never affected their performance and considering the state of the mistmatched pans I had before I'm just not that fussy.

I do love them though, I had ended up with some lovely pans before this which were all odds and sods but perfect sizes for me and all good cooking pans, I didn't really want to change but I'm glad I did keep and use these now. They are made by a company called Stellar.
