Quick Tesco Direct Free Delivery Loophole

What's the deal?

Tesco Direct* offers free delivery on all mobile phone products, and this makes for a nice little delivery loophole. If you're planning to buy something from the website, add a pay-as-you-go SIM card pack for £1.73, and you'll get free delivery on the whole order.

How to get one

Add this SIM pack* to your order. The discount won't show up until the last page (where you actually enter your payment details).

NB: One poster below has reported being charged for delivery after receiving the order (even though no charge showed at the checkout). The delivery charge was refunded quickly after a call to customer services, and no other instances of this have been reported.

The Saving

Standard UK next-day delivery costs £4.85, so you save £3.12 per order, and you have a spare mobile SIM card to give away or keep as a backup.

* Using these links helps the site stay ad-free and free to use, as they’re ‘affiliated links’ which invisibly take you via commercial price comparison services like Moneysupermarket or Find, which then pay this site per click. You shouldn’t notice any difference, the links don’t impact the product at all and the editorial line (the things I write) is NEVER impacted by the revenue. If it isn’t possible to get an affiliate link for the best product, it is still recommended and still included. For the sake of transparency go to direct.tesco.com for an unaffiliated link. If you intend using the SIM card rather than chucking it away then there are 2 other options which could give you cheaper calls for 50p more:
    Standard
    Extra

    Both currently reduced to £2.23

btw, the value sims don't have any credit on them whereas the standard tesco mobile sims have £1 credit already on.

Warning! tried the Tesco Direct sim free delivery last week.
Everything looks fine on the checkout - no delivery charge.
However, got my delivery yesterday and on close inspection found a delivery charge added at the bottom.
Phoned to complain, customer services said the sim was delivered free, the charge was for the other items even though they were delivered in the same package.! After going round in circles like this for some time, I told them the charge was not mentioned at checkout and I was sure this wasn't legal (is this correct?). They very quickly replied they would refund my card. (refund received on my card within 10 mins). They also implied this loophole would be sorted out fairly soon.
This was my first MSE adventure, so thanks to all out there for giving me the courage to challenge.

I have just ordered and it works (21 Feb)

Delivery charge for this order is£ 4.85
Subtotal after delivery for this order is£ 25.72
    Discounts & promotions
Free Delivery on Mobile Phones and Sim Cardsfor this order is -£ 4.85
Subtotal after discounts & promotions for this order is £ 20.87
    Card Payment £ 20.87

No where did it say any other charge, I will complain too, if I am charged extra. They have had over a week ( minimoneyme ordered last week) to stop this loophole, but haven't!

Will come back tomorrow, after I receive my order and let you know what happens.

I received an ecoupon with my Tesco points vouchers this week, which offers 500 extra points if I spend £75 on groceries at Tesco.com - I don't usually shop online as I hate paying the delivery fee.

This might actually tempt me to use the voucher. I do my RAC cover through Tesco points, and as I've taken to shopping more often at Asda since they racked up their organic range, I need to maximise my points by other means.

I shall watch to see if anyone else gets the delivery charge added on - and if they get it taken back off again by phoning in!

  • Does this work for Tesco grocery deliveries too, or just Tesco Direct?
