Old British Coins

Hello,
Mum has got a few old coins lying about the house like the big 50ps and big 10ps, not loads, just a few. Can they still be swapped at banks? Or is there anything else she can do with them?
Thanks

I don't know the answer, catz, but if the banks won't take them you could try emailing your query to the Bank of England at enquiries@bankofengland.co.uk. They swap old notes but I've no idea about coins.

Failing that have a look on Ebay to possibly sell them, people seem strangely drawn to defunked money...

Banks will change them for the value they are ie, give them an old 50p get new 50p back.

Thanks, mum wasn't sure if they changed them any more - bet if she had a good look round the house she'd find some really old coins. Do you reckon they would change them too? Might be better with the ebay idea on that one.

    I'll tell her, Thanks :)

I keep them, might seem a bit sad but I collect old coins for the children, all the fancy ones aswell, some fab 50ps included, and any foreign ones I end up with. They always comment at how heavy the old 50ps were.

I think banks will still change most of them.
One day I might be more organised...........

When I was little I found some old coins at my mums 1/2 p that sort of thing, I thought it was a bit weird and victorian & didn't quite get why they changed the coins. I thought it was amusing that they had other coins in the 'olden days'. Then, they changed (I think) the 5p and over time I got to realise that things change all the time. It wasn't just a straight swap of old days / new days.

Half penny going cost people a fortune IMO, those things that were rounded up to the next penny, and as I was a child then all 1/2 penny sweets went up to a penny :( pocket money never went so far ever again :rotfl:

I hate new 5ps too, they are so little and fiddly
