Novice Knitter Advice Please

Options
I want to get into knitting and knit myself some clothes. I have just knitted scarves before & never followed a pattern .

I just bought some wool from e-bay and OH wants a jumper. He wants it for wearing when he is sick, as when he was sick when he was younger he used to wear a jumper his mum knitted for his dad. It doesn’t have to be well knitted or anything - just big and cuddly and comforting – so I thought it would be an ideal first piece of clothing to make!:D

I just want to know, how do I find a (free) pattern to fit the wool I bought? Or how do I make the wool fit the pattern I want to use?

Let's start by you telling us what you have bought and how much of it you have?

That should be quite easy then, the standard weight wool in the US is worsted which is more or less aran. If you go to https://www.lionbrand.com you should find lots there.

Might be easier to start something small first, that is what I was advised to do until I got the hang of it, must admit I have barely started.
One day I might be more organised...........

i began knitting when I was expecting my daughter -baby clothes were a really good way to start - small, inexpensive and you can learn from your mistakes.

I have some pdf files of basic "joining together" knitting explanation if you would like me to email them to you - i.e once you have knitted the panels that make up a jumper, you need to sew them together in a way that makes them hang right.

The library is the best place to get a big bumber beginners book of knitting - it will have explanations of the stitches and what patterns mean when they give instructions.

Other than that, needle size is important - best to go to charity shops/car boot/jumble sales - someone is always selling a bundle knitting needles very cheaply and is far better than paying £4 a pair when you need 3 sizes!

Wool quality is also important - rubbish in, rubbish out...who wants a scratchy jumper in cheap wool when you've spent so much time making it?

What else....consistency - try to make every stitch the same - you'll learn if you are a loose or tight knitter in time (i.e. do your stitches tend to be little and tight, or loose and loopy), Either is fine as long as you are consistent - otherwise the jumper will look lopsided!

You have to make sure that you have enough wool to finish what you want (or be prepared to finish it in a different colour/shade)! I was using 4 50g balls for a baby's jumper but the wool was very fine...

Good luck, its great fun and very relaxing!
