May sound like a stupid question, but is IBS hereditary?

Hiya, my dad has it and so do I...I am not sure of the statistics to support it, but I would think it is.If you obey all the rules...you miss all the fun!! Katherine Hepburn0

It is not hereditary but it may run in families perhaps because of a dietary or environmental link. It may be constitutional, meaning you have extra-sensitive gut muscles, or an overreaction to certain foods and chemicals.
So because you dad had it is NOT a reason for you to get it BUT it may be, because you follow a similar diet, life style etc you end up with the same type of condition.
However try reading Selling sickness: the pharmaceutical industry and disease mongering and you may get a few clues as to what this condition is all about. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

It runs in our family (so to speak!). One of my sisters and I both have it, despite having very different lifestyles. In her case it's dairy and in mine wheat.Touch my food ... Feel my fork!0
