my messy cupboard

Options
I have a cupboard in my house that I can access from my kitchen and my hall, it's long and narrow and has a door at either end - a good big cupboard approx 3 metres in length and 1 m wide. At the moment it holds the following but I think I could do a lot more with the space.

Currently in the cupboard:

2 x laundry baskets (for whites and coloured)
3 x plastic boxes (for recycling and putting cans, plastic bottles and paper in)
1 x hoover
1 x clothes dryer (the concertina thing that expands so you can dry clothes on)
1 x basket with all my ironing in it.
1 x ironing board.

The central heating boiler is in here as well but I can't move that :-) makes the cupboard nice and warm for drying clothes but obviously means I can't store food in it.

I think there is a lot more I could do with my cupboard - perhaps some shelving etc. I'm really looking for ideas as to how everyone else organises there cupboards at home and to see if I can steal any ideas. Any handy tips anyone?

Cheers!

I would love that size storage. I have a small cupboard which on one side has a metal shelving rack (got it in B&Q I think) and the other side is for the hoover etc. I find these ideal for storage, but mines used for food as it doesn't have a boiler (it was the old coal cupboard) Would be great to have that much hiding space, I miss my old house as we had a cupboard as big as my bedroom in there with my old chest freezer (which I had to part with) in aswell as the vacuum cleaner, laundry etc.
One day I might be more organised...........

Would be a fab space for buying non-food stuffs when on special etc - loo rolls, kitchen rolls etc. Also, couldn't you store cans or dried goods in there - at least your cerals wouldn't go soggy :D I'd be tempted to clear it out, paint in white (easier to find things) then put in loads of shelving.

If you don't want to keep food in there, are there items in your kitchen cupboards that could be stored in here ie baking tins, casserole dishes etc that would free up space in your kitchen for food?

see - this is why I like this board. People come along and suggest things that my wee mind hadn't thought of!

Ticklemouse - I was just complaining to hubby yesterday as I stuffed more toilet rolls in the cupboard upstairs that I needed more space for them....I've always kept them upstairs in the cupboard beside the toilet but perhaps I will think about moving downstairs.

I think the idea about moving my baking tins in would be a good idea. I hardly use them and they take up valuable cupboard space. My casseroles and bowls though are in constant use :-)

Where do you currently keep your cleaning products? You could free up another cupboard (under the sink?) by keeping your cleaning stuff in there.

Just had a look in my hall cupboard & it contains - wine rack (plus wine :D), mop & bucket, hoover, ironing board, feather duster, coat rack & shoes, but is probably only 1/3 of the size of yours.
  • If you have a seperate loo, you can put in a narrow cupboard above the door, it doesn't take up any room and is using 'dead' space. I've seen them do this with books above doors in rooms filled with book cases, but there nothing stopping you putting a couple of doors on and painting it either white or the same colour as your loo.
  • Ikea do some great storage to utilise wall and ceiling space, I've got a thing attached to wall that holds the hoover pipe and head, also one for the iron and ironing board. How about one of those racks that you hang from the ceiling for hanging pots on? They also do cheap shelving racks.

I've put up an old shower curtain pole right at the top of our cupboard and in the winter I hang lots of my washing on hangers and dry it in the cupboard, doesn't take long at all, and reduces the need for ironing!

I have a room, fondly known as the 'glory hole' which sounds very similar to your cupboard.

I have the chest frezzer and tumble drier in there, as well as it being storage space for the stock piles of cleaning materials and toiletries.

Coats also go in there, with an airer. I also keep my recycling bags in there, paint and have a plastic box with car bits n pieces in there. My DIY tools live in this cupboard, along with my iorning board and iron which gets little use!

I'm not sure I could get any more in my cupbord if I tried but I know I would be totally lost without this large space for these odds n sods!
Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.
