I have just started making bread for the past couple of weeks and I love it but Hubbie is taking a bit of getting used to it.
Anyway currently the bread sits on the cooling rack and has a slice or two cut off and then put back on the cooling rack until it is all gone. It get losely covered with a supermarket carrier bag and generally looks untidy.
Are Bread Bins any good? are any better than others? What is the best way to store my HM bread?
Thanks

I bought two cheapo tea cloths from Sains ....27p each ...blue check material and use these to wrap the bread in...keeps the bread well.
DH also diff to convince that HM bread is what we should be eating[too many yrs of eating chemicals] so I added tbsp of dried milk as per lots of recipes on here and the bread was much more acceptable to him
PS I do put them in a pine/ beech type bread bin..like this one

also keep a butter dish and electric bread knife in itWe don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.0 -
I don't make my own bread but buy uncut bread from the bakers. I find the best way to keep it is to put it into a paper bag or wrap in a teacloth then put inside a plastic carrier bag in the fridge. It keeps fresh and doesn't go dry for over a week.0

I use a big plastic box with a lid in the cupboard, I used to have a classic bread bin but it was too small for the bread and too big for the cupboard IYSWIM.
Whatever you choose give it a good wash out between loaves, the crumbs go mouldy and can wreck your new bread if you don't notice.0 -
I have a bread bin, its like a wooden box with a lid, and I swear it makes the bread go off quicker, so my advice is dont bother!!, any tips on how i hcan stop this happening?:A :j0

I use an old stock pot mum gave me. Sits on the corner in the kitchen and looks ok as has a pattern on it.
maybe look at second hand shop??0 -
I got a chrome number from a car boot sale (new) its the same as one in woolies.
Personally for HM bread we do a small loaf & wrap in a old pillow case or cloth napkin- i think it stales easily though- thats the no preservatives in it. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I keep all bread loosely wrapped in the fridge. It keeps very well. Must be wrapped though as the cold dry air will dry it out.
I have a large ennamel (sp?) bread bin in the cupboard, but that only gets used when I'm cooking industrial amounts of spaghetti
You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.

I`m far too tight to buy a bread bin when my microwave is sat there doing nothing. So it gets shoved in the microwave on a plate and the bread lasts until it`s all scoffed.
I even turn the lecky off on the microwave, whats the point in wasting lecky to have a clock on the microwave when 9 times out of 10 it`s always wrong in my house.Debt Free Date:10/09/2007 :j :money:0 -
Some good ideas for storage thanks! I use a bread crock that we got for £3 from a carboot for my HM bread and I keep a brown loaf(just for me;) ) in the fridge as it keeps for ages as I dont use much.
As has been said already its because there's no chemical nasties in it that it doesn't keep as long as shop bought bread.Do what you love :happyhear0 -
I have an old enamel bread bin bought for £3 at an auction. We touched up the chips with enamel paint and also touched in the BREAD on the side. I buy and bake bread and tend just to put the homemade in a used bread bag after colling. Mind you it goes so quick it doesn't need keeping long.0
